"Flaming Star"


Director Don Siegel had previously directed "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" in 1956.


Working titles for the movie were, "Flaming Lance" after the novel by Claire Huffaker. The original title for this movie was, "Black Star". Elvis even recorded a song with that name. When the title was changed, he re-recorded the song, using the same words and melody, but changing the word "black" with "flaming". The song, "Black Star" was unreleased for years, until it appeared on the Elvis boxset, "Collectors Gold" in 1991.


Elvis was to have worn brown contact lenses in the film as there is no such thing as a blue-eyed indian, however he didn't wear the lenses in the end and nobody commented on the small discrepancy.


The Los Angeles Indian comunity made Elvis a blood brother of their tribe. Chief Wah-Nee-Ota inducted Elvis into their Los Angeles tribal council on completion of filming.


Whilst Elvis was making the movie he had trouble with over zealous fans trying to reach him. A group of eleven teenagers crashed the studio gates in the back of a laundry truck but they only got as far as Col. Parker's office before being detected.


Originally planned as a vehicle for Marlon Brando, not Elvis Presley.

Trivia from "Love Me Tender"




a. "Love Me Tender" was in the top 10 grossing films of 1956, at number 8.

b. "Love Me Tender" was originally to be titled "The Reno Brothers", but when advanced sales of Elvis' "Love Me Tender" single passed one million - a first for a single - the film title was changed to match.

c. Another film telling the story of "The Reno Brothers, Rage at Dawn" starring Randolph Scott, had been released by RKO Radio Pictures only the year before.

d. During one scene in the movie, Elvis plays a Gibson L-5, which was not invented until 1922, even though the movie is set during the American Civil War.

e. Elvis' mother, Mrs Presley, was so upset that her son's character had died in the movie, that apparently Elvis told Colonal Parker that he never wanted to be killed in any more movies.

f. Elvis' first stand-in in the movie was a young struggling actor from Los Angeles, the young man's name was Marco Lopez, and he would make a name for himself in the Jack Webb produced NBC/Universal Series "Emergency!"

Trivia from "Change of Habit".

a. Elvis' co-stars included Mary Tyler Moore, singer Barbara McNair, and Jane Elliot (in her film debut). Ed Asner appeared again (his film debut was in "Kid Galahad") and would co-star with Mary Tyler Moore in her television show.

b. The Blossoms, who provided backing vocals for Elvis' 1968 TV Special, appeared in "Change of Habit".

c. Mahalia Jackson, the gospel singer who was much admired by Elvis, visited Elvis on the Set.

d. Exteriors were shot at locations including the area around Fifth and Main in downtown Los Angeles and in a park near Universal Studios.

e. A dozen large rats used in a ghetto scene escaped and the sound stage had to be evacuated until animal handlers could round them up.

f. In one scene a bus goes past with the station I.D. of a Los Angeles radio station, though the film is set in New York City.

g. Elvis' character, Dr John Carpenter, was a name Elvis adopted as an alias when avoiding the crush of press and fans who would otherwise get wind of a hotel reservation or similar.

h. Elvis' character was from Shelby County, Tennessee (which includes Memphis) and wore a University of Tennessee Medical School (located in Memphis) sweatshirt.

i. Before general release, "Change of Habit" was shown to psychologists specializing in the treatment of Autism in Los Angeles and San Jose.

Trivia from "Jailhouse Rock".




1) "Jailhouse Rock", Elvis' third movie, shot in 1957.

2) Elvis was assigned to Clark Gable's former dressing room.

3) It often has been reported incorrectly that Elvis was the choreographer for the big "Jailhouse Rock" production number in this film. Alex Romero was the choreographer for the film, but Elvis's own natural moves were used.

Alex and Elvis worked their way through to create the now-classic "Jailhouse Rock" production number, one of pop/rock music's greatest and most iconic moments on film, a performance considered by many to be ahead of it's time and the father of modern-day music videos.

4) With all the dance movements fresh in his mind, Elvis was excited to do the production number, but an unusual mishap caused a delay. While sliding down the pole in the scene, Elvis lost the cap off of a tooth. It was discovered that he had aspirated the cap and that it had lodged in his lung. The cap was successfully removed by a surgeon, who parted his famous vocal cords and retrieved the errant dental appliance. Although Elvis' voice was hoarse for a few days, to the relief of everyone, there was not any permanent vocal damage and Elvis was released from the hospital on the 16th. Ironically, Vice Everett, Elvis' character in the film, had an injury to his vocal cords and had friends and associates holding their breath to see if there would be lasting damage to his singing voice.

5) This was the day Elvis' family moved into their new home, Graceland, in Memphis.

6) During filming, actor Robert Mitchum visited Elvis and indicated he wanted Elvis to play his son in his forthcoming film "Thunder Road". Elvis did not end up doing the film.

7) During production of "Jailhouse Rock" Elvis received a wallaby as a gift from fans. Unable to keep the pet, he sent it home to Memphis as a donation to the local zoo.

8) While filming there was a small fire in Jennifer Holden's dressing room. Elvis, ever the hero, carried the actress out to safety.
