    charro a differnt role a differn't man

as i went through my movie collection i decided to watch charro , it sure has bin ages since i watched it so i decided to see it again, what a great movies and it truly was a differn't role , i think he dd some great acting here and some of the cast members were also strong , anyone else think this was a good western ? I wonder if he had done less musicals and more of these serious roles maybe he would still have had his creative juices flowing and movie ambitions realised.

I'm not a fan of westerns but Charro gets an exception. Very strong acting job by our main man.

[COLOR="darkred"]I could not agree with you guys less !! As much as I respect your views my feeling is that this is the worst movie. It was embarrassing to watch at times. As for the acting; what acting? There were a lot of shots of people just looking at each other. I would say that Elvis dialogue probably covered no more than two pages. The only one who did any acting of any kind was the guy who played Victor French's twisted brother, and he grossly overacted. Mind you compared to the rest of them that wouldn't be hard to do !
I always get the feeling when watching this kind of movie that they were used as training for junior directors and editors etc.
Don't think that I am knocking Elvis, far from it. Like you I feel he was never given a chance when it came to movie rolls.COLOR]

Harum Scarum was actually promoting Elvis and America in Islamic parts of the Asian continent..

Nah just kidding. It had its flavor though.

Frankie And Johnnie, Trouble With girls, and Stay Away Joe were all much worse than Charro.

Charro was written, produced, and directed by one guy Charles Marquis Warren....who was mainly involved in B-westerns and western TV shows like "Rawhide"
He was trying to do an American version of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns which had been very successful. This is the problem with the film.
Unfortunately he was just not up to the task of doing everything-his script was just not good. Elvis tried to be tough, and gritty but the lines he had to say were so stiff sounding.....it never really came off IMO This was a great chance to break the mold-the producer and director should have ordered a rewrite-but in this case they were also the writer (no objectivity)

He made a mighty fine looking cowboy regardless of whatever anyone thinks of the movie.

The movie was offered to Clint Eastwood first who turned it down.

I think in the script originally offered to Eastwood the movie was more violent and gritty but when it became an Elvis vehicle that was all took out.

I loved Elvis in Charro. I was very proud of his acting in that movie.

It's a bit `TV-movie' for my liking, maybe the original script had more guts to it.
Elvis does ok and it is miles better than PHS, Harum Scarum etc

Maybe had they left the nude scene with Ina Balin in the movie then it might've been considered a classic.

this is one of my fave Elvis movies

it is totally different, and it's a completely credible movie - not at all an Elvis travelogue, despite punching out the guy and getting the girl

it was gritty, funny and didn't have any songs.

I actually don't believe I even said that. Since you ask though, the answer is No!! But I'd like to ask you, would you put Charro ahead of King Creole, Flaming Star, Kid Galahad,Follow That Dream, Jailhouse Rock ???

Although I think it was a decent film attempty, I found the acting only medicore, the movement of the film to be slow and plodding, and the dialogue a bit stiff as an earlier poster mentioned. I feel the film had good supporting actors but in my humble opinion, but were unable to elevate the film to a greater level.

Elvis' look indeed was patterned after the classic Leone westerns but without the dramatic punch necessary to sustain an entertaining movie for me.

I think the acting, directing, supporting cast and script were far superior in th emovie Flaming Star.

You called Charro the worst of his movies. So yes you did say that. But to answer your question. No I would not put it ahead of those others you listed. But it would be up there with them among his best acting roles.
