Sylvia Shemwell Of The Sweet Inspirations Passes Away

After seeing the news of Myrna Smith's hospitalization, I just read in an email where Sylvia Shemwell, who had a stroke in 2001, has passed away. What's really upsetting is that this happened over a month ago and we're just now hearing about it!!

It is with deep sadness that Elvis Unlimited breaks the news of Sylvia Shemwell's death. Sylvia passed away on February 13, 2010. Sylvia was an original member of The Sweet Inspirations.

She stopped touring with the group in 2001 due to a stroke. Sylvia's sister, Judy Clay was a great gospel and soul singer. She worked with Billy Vera in the 60's. They were the first racially integrated duo in the US.

Billy Vera gave this exclusive comment to the passing of Sylvia, " This is the first I heard of Sylvia's death. Her sister, Judy Clay and I were singing partners in the late 60s. We made hit records of "Storybook Children" and "Country Girl-City Man." Sylvia and her group, the Sweet Inspirations, also sang on our album on Atlantic Records. Sylvia was a very talented and nice person, and I liked her very much." Elvis Unlimited sends our condolences to the family and friends of Sylvia Shemwell.

While I'm not saying that this late info isn't true it's strange that EPE hasn't put it on their official site by now for it to have been a month ago since she passed. It's possible the date was meant to be March 13 as in this past weekend instead of Feb 13. It is really sad to see one of The Sweet Inspirations leave us. They're music legends and a very big part of the Elvis legacy. This goes to show that time is passing us all by quickly and before we know it all of the important people in the Elvis world (minus the MM) will be gone. This is why it's so important to get young people interested and hooked on Elvis to carry the torch and to keep the flame burning forever.

Quite sad to hear about Sylvia. I always enjoyed listening to the Sweets, and their talent is incredible.
