Whether the "The" is included in the movie title or not, the E was added because it refers to a clause that binds Allen's character to be the next Santa Claus.
Look at the way the E was obviously meant to stand out in the title. That is to acknowledge the correct spelling of the name (Claus) and that the E is representing the aforementioned scenario.
