    why collect originals?

over the years i have bin asked by many why collect original cd's dvd's when you can get cdr or dvdr , for me i just like having the original , i started with albums in early december 70 and worked it real well into the late 80's but as soon as i got a wiff of cd's with collectors gold being my first i had to change over and i did and i havn't looked back i just love collecting and seeing the original art work cdr's just aint for me , i hope i don't sound pompus here but understandable a collection should look like a collection i guess so what do you all collect and how do you feel about imitations?

have to agree, I much prefer the "proper" Cd.... and I enjoy actually walking into a shop and buying them, having them put in a bag and going off home all excited to listen to it... probably a bit old-fashioned at this stage!... I do have quite a lot of copied stuff as well..and although I love the music on them they just don`t look like much when they`re all lined-up in their little white cases like some kind of office files!
As part of a collection though nothing beats the records...with the big smiling Elvis face on the front!

    Re: why collect originals?

    Unique question lvs2day!!!

For me, it really depends on what we're talking about. If we're talking about officially released RCA CD's, official video releases and the FTD CD's, then yes I like to collect the originals. If we're talking import CD's & videos, then I really don't have a problem with CD-R's or DVD-R's for those, especially with the high prices on the originals!!! Always trying to save a little money wherever I can...

    Re: why collect originals?

To me, CDs (whether they are originals or copies) are simply storehouses for digital copies of the music.

They hold no intrinsic value to me at all. If I lost all my CDs, they could - over a lot of time and quite a bit money - be replaced, and relatively easily. There are compartively few rare CDs out there.

Your CD copy of, say, Aloha, is no different to mine whatsoever, either on the cover and especially not in sound.

Ah, but vinyl ... vinyl ... VINYL!!!

That's how Elvis first appeared to the world, and to all of us older fans.

Each single, EP or LP ends up being different to its counterparts ... there are little scratches and pops on every one, all of them different.

Each cover wears differently: little creases, folds etc. The albums are mine: they have my history on them and in them. And so do everyone else's.

The great thing about younger fans only sticking to CDs is that it leaves more vinyl out there for me to snaffle up!

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ... VINYL!!!

I love my Elvis vinyl and 45's, the cd's for me just don't hold the same oh i don't know thrill i guess is the word that best describes it.

The vinyl experience is righteous indeed. I can't explain how I felt when I was a teenager and found a brand new still sealed LP of Madison Square Garden!! I felt as smug as the chap on the right ohhhhh Yessss

Don't get me wrong I love vinyl however the quality of CD's can be breath taking, especially some of the remastered stuff that has been around over the last ten years or so. I couldn't live without either, although my ipod tends get a little more attention these days through ease of use

    Re: why collect originals?

Vinyl being the medium of Elvis' day, and for that matter being what most all the best music ever recorded was primarily or initially released on (subjective perhaps, but...) makes it preferred.

I am not an audiophile and can't speak to the comparative sonic attributes -- the ranges of sound and all that. I just know I like the sound a record makes. It seems fuller and warmer, which some will tell you is an audio illusion, a side effect of some shortcoming or another. I don't care; it works for my ears.

The sound of the needle hitting the record. Some Rice Krispies imitations here and there. The thing on the turntable that lets you visually monitor the pitch (don't know what it's called). The size of the records themselves and the covers. Cleaning them and the needle. The process of playing them, with all their wonderful inconveniences. The smell. I love all that stuff.

Another thing I like about it is a bit less concrete but I'll mention it anyway. I have bought a lot of used vinyl -- I've bought some new too, but far more used -- and I like playing records that were played a long time ago...mainly when Elvis was alive, when the songs were first released or whatever. I know it's a little out there but there is something more alive about the music then. And you wonder who played the music before and think about how the song may have been burning up the charts then, Elvis' star being still on the rise. Whatever it is (if only in my brain), it gives those songs some advantage over ones on tapes or CDs or whatever manufactured later. There is some kind of audio reincarnation thing going on.

Thanks for bearing with me on that last part. Whew.

Just remembered I had taken a picture with my phone a while back for the heck of it of that pitch control thing I mentioned above. Also another photo I took.

Cds for me all the way. Only originals too...i don't do CDrs.

Some Cds are worth mega bucks these days...i have numerous that are worth a decent amount. They aren't up there with the numbers that are worth alot as far as Vinyl goes..but when you think that the CD is only just over 20 years old...

I do understand people who like Vinyl from a sentimental point of view. That being the way it was released and all....but you just can't beat the sound on most of the modern Cds. DSD is amazing

    Re: why collect originals?

    Thanks, Matt.

And I know what you mean, Chris. There is some really amazing, clean sound on some of those new records too though. 180-gram, virgin vinyl and all that. I have a few Elvis records of that variety.

WHAT?! I did not know about this bad boy. I bet it sounds magical. Jungle Room FTD on vinyl. Pricey, but that would be something to have.

And speaking of pricey, and the CD vs. vinyl thing, I may have mentioned this before but have you all seen this -- the laser turntable?

Very nicely written...some great thoughts there..doesn`t seem "out there" at all to me.... my brain works along those lines most of the time!

Glad to hear it, Jack. Thanks.

And thanks to Getlo for your thoughtful post, which got me thinking along those lines. Much agreed on all points.

The sound of the needle hitting the record, the rice krispies imitations, couldn't agree more, those are the pleasures one can get and not to many will.

Anyway, vinyls apart. About Cds, Elvis or any other artists, despite: DSD/SACD, 5.1, or collectibles/special editions (because of the booklets, artwork or something special on them apart of the music) I rather go digital, I tunes store like and so, no point to me about getting more and more useless plastic, lap and I pod wise I guess.

DVD's its different, I do always like to have the originals.

    ABSOLUTELY RIGHT GETLO!!!

I've collected Elvis on vinyl for 32 years now and there is nothing like finding one of those original albums that I still need for my collection!!! There's just nothing like pulling the record out of the jacket, flipping it around to check the vinyl for scratches or scuffs, examining the cover for flaws...just fantastic!!!

Thanks for the reminder of why I still collect and maintain my vinyl collection Getlo...it had gotten a little lost in my present day collection of Elvis CD's....
