    Which do you?

We all know Elvis was not a big fan of his own memorabila i.e cups, stamps perfume and so on but if you do like it what Elvis Items do you collect if any?

My own personal choice as to be black and white portraits, trading cards, mugs and calenders thats about it

I dont really care for some of the things that they sell some things are a little OTT but again thats everyones personal choice.

I did see some Elvis toilet roll for sale once thats just

    love and peace,
    Susan.

When I think of a lot of the things you find in the EPE catalogue and Graceland shops, it calls to mind what Eddie (Randy Quaid) on National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation told Clark (Chevy Chase) regarding his wanting to fumigate the burned out chair that smelled like cooked cat--and the way that he said it: "This is a high-quality item..."

(If that doesn't ring a bell, then be sure to watch that sometime next month. )

But Susan, the sort of things you named--minus any toilet accessories, of course--I am not above getting. Sorry I can't think of any specifics at the moment.
...you won't forget me when I go.

I have by and large resisted the temptation to buy all the stuff put out by EPE, maybe the baseball cap and if I find it reasonable a T-shirt.Oh what about a key chain ...

    Hi Susan,
I collect as much as i can....cd's,Videos,DVD's,Books....they are most of what i would go for...then there are Photos (including Calendars etc), Posters ( i have been collecting movie posters for a long time....but i still have a fair few originals to find),Magazines.....the list goes on

I do draw the line though.....when we get into cups...plates....etc....thats something that just doesn't interest me.

As i have said before....the question is usually....am i obsessed ? My wife would say i was and to a certain extent...i would probably agree

    GREAT QUESTION SUSAN!!!

I have collected Elvis for around 28 years now, and really don't have any one particular area of collecting that I won't venture into. One thing I will say though, is that while I receive the periodic Elvis catalogs from EPE and do like to see what items they offer for sale, I tend to not buy many items directly from EPE due to the high cost.

One area of collecting that is very cool to me is trying to find some of the old merchandise from the 50's. I just bought an original Elvis hat from 1956...while not in mint condition, it is in very good shape with only minor signs of wear, which considering it's age, is VERY good!! It's the first time I've come across one in my years of collecting, and just looks VERY cool!! I've actually had to pass on several items being offered for sale from the 1950's because the seller wanted WAY TOO MUCH money for something that was in obviously rough shape. It's heartbreaking to me to see something which is so rare in such poor shape, yet the seller thinks it is worth mint condition price just because it's Elvis! But, this might very well be one of the hardest areas of collecting that there is....who knew back in 1956 when they bought Elvis merchandise that it would wind up being so collectible and worth so much? Not many people bought things back then to collect...they bought them to display, wear, etc., which is why it is increasingly more difficult to find original 50's official Elvis memorabilia in mint or near mint shape!

Of course, I collect Elvis CD's, videos, and most recently have just gotten into DVD's now that I have a DVD player! I also collect the original LP's, 45's and 78's....but this is also getting to be quite a massive task for me because I am only missing a few of the original vinyl records for my collection, and the ones I am missing are either hard to find or very expensive to purchase in mint or near mint shape. For example, a few years ago I FINALLY found a mono copy of the SPEEDWAY LP for my collection....it took me over 20 years to finally find one and fortunately, it was in mint shape....but the shape combined with the rarity of the LP made it VERY expensive....but worth EVERY penny!!!

Sorry to ramble on here a bit....basically, I collect EVERYTHING!!!

    TCB!

We don't mind you rambling Mike

Yeah...i used to collect the vinyl too - but i went so serious into cd collecting that something had to give. I sold most of my collection to provide the cash for my cd collection. Something that in one way i regret...but then i wouldn't have half the cd collection i have now )

I still have a few bits of vinyl....and i am hoping to start collecting it again in the future (don't tell the wife ).

I do love memorabilia mind you...even if i don't have as much as i would like. I have an autograph from 1960, that i guess would be my prized possesion - apart from the actual music...which will remain the most important part of my collection. I have collected a fair few books from the early 60's and a couple from the 50's. They are pretty expensive...but worth having....and i always look at that sort of thing as an investment anyhow...not that i would be likely to part with them though

An interesting topic....great to hear what other peoples passions are as dar as Elvis collecting goes

    THANKS NIGHT RIDER!!!

I have given some thought to the idea, like you, of selling the vinyl that I have to help provide additional finances for my CD collection. But then I think that I would just have to sell everything, because if I only sold some of it, then it would drive me nuts that my collection was incomplete again!! I mean, since I am still missing some vinyl for my collection, it is technicaly incomplete now....but it's incomplete WITH THE HOPE of eventually becoming complete! Does that make any sense at all????

Besides....I have collected for so long now, I would just hate to part with any of my collection!!

That is SO cool that you have an autograph from 1960!! I have one on the 45 picture sleeve for FOOLS FALL IN LOVE which set me back quite a bit....but it was well worth the extra money I spent, considering I was able to trace the pedigree of the autograph back to the original owner with considerable ease and was satisfied with the authenticity of it. I also have an original scarf from a show at the Omni in Atlanta in '73, again a little costly but easily traced back to its original owner and hence well authenticated.

I agree with you though, that when purchasing Elvis collectibles, it's always considered an investment, to me too! Some people put their money into savings bonds or the stock market, but I like to invest my money into my Elvis collection! And, I have several offers from people who want to put in an offer for my collection, should I decide to sell in the future for whatever reason (although I don't foresee me selling any of my collection unless I run into a dire emergency of some kind), so I know that my "investment" is safe for now in terms of sale-ability, should it ever come down to that.

I am like you that I am very interested to see what other fans collect!!

    TCB!
    Mike

P.S. I promise not to tell your wife about your possible return to the world of vinyl collecting!!

Interesting thread. My story, in a nutshell:

Been a fan since I was a kid. There were periods where I lost interest or took a respite from "Elvis" (ie: growing up) .................. only to find myself returning to my passion permanently as an adult.

For some reason, ............ my EP Collection was the only thing I really held onto from my childhood. Now, of course, I'm glad I did it (must have been a reason I never let go of it all).

As an adult, ............ I've been very turned off by much of the blatant "crap" that EPE endorses / sells .................. as a result, .............. I stuck with just the music, books, ............ & videos (pretty much still do). As for Music - only what is truly unheard to my ears / books - truly substantive & essential books are a rarity nowadays / videos ---> well, we all know what is worthwhile as hardcore fans.

To satisfy my "passion" (so to speak) ............... (vinyl / promos / CD's / limited edition this-that's / etc. ............ never really satisfied me because I wanted things that nobody else had or could get) ........... I turned to EP's Autographs & Personal Items.

Have never regretted it and have been fully satisfied ever since. To each their own, so long as it makes you happy.

WELCOME TO OUR BOARD RICHARDO316!!! HOPE YOU ENJOY IT HERE!!! (h)

I've think I've seen that Graceland replica advertised....is that the one that has the removable rooms, and they slide into the back of the main house? I think the Jungle Room has a working waterfall, if I remember correctly? Do I have the right one?

Once again, WELCOME to our board!!!

    Thumbs up What a collection

It is very interesting seeing what other fans collect regarding memorabilla. Although I find some things a little OTT each to their own I have yet to visit Graceland so who knows what I will return with thanks for your replies.

    love and peace,
    Susan.

I didn't collect nearly as much until I made my trip to Graceland. But now I have a little of everything. I really like wearing an Elvis shirt or carrying my Elvis purse because it never fails to start up a conversation with someone. I've met alot of fellow fans this way. And I'm always surprised at how young some of them are!

As far as where I get my stuff, the answer is anywhere I can! Some from Ebay, some from EPE, and the rest from whereever I see it.
    Before Elvis, there was nothing....

    Thumbs up Me too

Here is a story for you.....

I was out shopping and I had my Elvis bag with me and a lady stopped me to ask me where I had bought it from? I was only too pleased to tell her and we ended up having a coffee together sharing some Elvis moments it was lovely I still keep in touch with her It's most certainly is a talking point taking Elvis out with you

I can not wait to visit Graceland

    love and peace,
    Susan.

Along those same lines, I met a woman when I went to Graceland who has become one of my very best friends! I was only there for one day and evening and had traveled there by myself. She was there with a girlfriend who wasn't much of an Elvis fan (imagine that!). We ended up on the same shuttle coming from the airport to the Heartbreak Hotel and I spent that evening and the next day with her. She lives in Florida and I'm in California and we talk on the phone at least once a week. We're planning a trip back to Graceland this coming spring!
    Before Elvis, there was nothing....
