Post Jerry Scheff Quits TCB Band European Tour

Rumours have been floating around for quite a while that Jerry Scheff wanted to get out of the European TCB Band 'Elvis The Concert' tour.

A recent announcement now informs us that he has now been replaced by bassist...

I like Jerry, and bass players in general, but this isn't overly bad.

Jerry could easily be replaced, although I'd like to have seen Duke Bardwell come in. Or another bass player who may have worked with Elvis.

Any single member of the TCB Band could be replaced at the drop of a hat.

With the exception of James Burton, of course.

Once he goes, the TCB Band is dead as far as I'm concerned.

He's good.. real ****ing good! His style is impossible to reproduce and he's such a nice guy.

You probably didn't know about my top secret plans to kidnap James, so that I have the lead guitar player who does whatever I WANT. Don't worry; with me everything's easy. I only need a yes or no - if he refuses I'll hold the entire world ransom at the cost of James' favorite guitars!

Wonder if it had anything to do with his health? No, some of these guys partied hard and now at their age who could put up with the constant touring.
Would hate to see James leave - Fabian, not the Pink Paisley!?!

Yes, even though I love James, when he toured here to Australia last time (2006) and used another guitar rather than the pink paisley, it just wasn't quite the same.

I asked him about it, and he simply said that, as a guitarist, his latest guitar was just where he was at.

I dont think its going to last much longer i mean they have been going for 12 years now, that is 5 more years than they worked with elvis.

Pink colored guitars are a girl's best friend..

Anyway.. at least James is going to have to stay. Aren't there other artists out there who like to work with him?

I met Jerry around the 30th Anniversary in Memphis and he was a lovely guy.
He's struggled with hearing problems for a long time so that may have contributed to his decision.

Personally, I think the live version of Suspicious Minds without Jerry is a pretty daunting prospect. Sure, James' riff is a classic and Ronnie is always dynamite but what Jerry brought to the second half of that number was extraordinary. He was always the 'seriously groovy' element in the band and I'd really miss him in that lineup.

James no longer uses the paisley telecaster anymore. He basically 'retired' it in 1991. And as far as Jerry not going on the ETC European tour, here is the answer (Courtesy of Brian Quinn at FECC and Elvis Unlimited):

Elvis Unlimited spoke exclusively with Jerry Scheff last night during the Elvis 69 concert. And Jerry has confirmed to us that he will not be on the tour with Elvis The Concert in Europe. But Jerry says that does not mean the TCB band is breaking up. Jerry tells us the band is recording with Dennis Jale in the next coming days. And will be traveling to Brazil to perform as well. So despite the rumors, this will not be the last time you see or hear the TCB band together!

So, according to this, Jerry is only sitting out this portion of the European tour and he's not quitting the TCB band altogether.

    Please.

Jerry's a fine player, no doubt, but playing the bass isn't rocket science, even when compared to playing lead.

Bass is second fiddle (to mix musical metaphors) to the lead guitar, and always will be.

Rhythm is a very distant third and virtually unnecessary (with all due respect to John Wilkinson who, from an audio standpoint wasn't missed in Elvis the Concert at all, although everyone missed him personally).

Jerry or whomever ... no difference at all.

    Do you play?

Anyway, I agree with your metaphors here and the hierarchy of importance etc, but I do think people will miss Jerry's contribution more than they might expect. He's more than your average player. Naturally, it wouldn't be as conspicuous as James being absent but bass occupies the listener's consciousness in a slightly different way.

I'm sure if they had to they could replace any of the original musicians but then to me it would never be the same.
