Second one, anyhow, was used here in Mexico as the 1987 cover for the L.P/Cassette/CD called: Elvis Baladas. (One of the last 3 albums released that year that were available on those three formats over here, off topic just memories from somebody that grew up in the 80's ).

I remember back then as a 7 year old kid, I was very impressed as I though Elvis was crying on that photograph, so looking at that pic while lisening to some of the big ballads on that L.P. like "It´s Imposible" or the tender ones like "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", used to gave me the chills. As a kid I was totally much more into the rock and roll stuff, but it was that pic man, or what I thought they were tears, what made me hear that L.P. for hours.

I still, while looking at his performance of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" on the rehearsal concert, which is where Im sure this picture was taken, I still think is not only sweat what is running to his cheeks at one certain moment.
I know there was a thread about it and most of the fans told he was only sweating, but I also still think maybe he really got so emotional that he was not only sweating while he was singing this song. I didn't see this on his cheek on the satellite concert, only on the rehearsal. But it is sure he sang it with so much emotion.

I have the first Ed Bonja shot here on the wall....one of the best!

I don't like the Press Conference shots.....some have said he was just tired....hmmmm....he sounded stoned as some have said......never seemed to take him long to get back to the drugs after a challenge....I heard he was unable to go out the day after Aloha because he was back on them......so sad!

I read that Elvis wasnt due to do this particular interview and had taken some sleeping pills an hour or so before. Then as he was getting ready for bed, the Colonel told him he had to do the last minute interview. Some of the MM (alledgedly) complained (not sure if Elvis did) and said he was way too drowsy from the tablets to do it. However, we all know the Col. gets his own way and Elvis ended up doing the said interview ..looking and sounding terrible.

Sorry, I can never remember where I read things. Just some things tend to stick in my mind. I tend to believe the story though, because however much you take drugs to sleep, wake up, etc, you would have to be downright daft to take them right before you are due to do an interview!

    Sorry, but no.

That pic is from the rehearsal show, as is the second one.

Killer shots though they may be, they wouldn't be right.

I agree, if they ever re-release a collectors version of the LP with both shows plus the added songs recorded after the show, they should change the photo they had to this one.

Great job! Love the second version!!! Such a simple change made one of the most ulgy Elvis LP cover, a pretty cool one.

Was it too hard to do it? did you took a whole month? did you needed to be an art genius? then why most of Elvis album covers post '71 are just so shitty, they where either retarded or they just didn't care. And that was the decade when the rule became: album covers are as important as the content of the album. Dam! if only...

Love what you did with that cover, thanks for sharing.

Here is another pic, probably just seconds after or before the one that started this thread was taken.

it took me about 30 minutes total but back then they used to hand crop or cutout photos then hand past it to the black background. I just think that RCA didn't have any respect for their recording artists. Maybe what prevented Elvis to be challenged and updated. Back then they where in my opinion, a glorified major label. They had Bing Crosby and Elvis. Bing Crosby had the first ever million selling single, "WHITE CHRISTMAS". I think Elvis was sick of them, he worked hard in the 50's, they screwed him in 60's with all the soundtracks and putting his Nashville recordings as bonus songs. Leaving little room for creativity. They even used a 1962 photo on a 1966 LP cover, "HOW GREAT THOU ART". The photo on the back cover was a nice enough photo to use. They just came off to me as very outdated in everyway.
You're right, ever since THE BEATLES, SGT. PEPPER LP, the bar was set higher but RCA in the 50's & 60's would use the LP Covers as sort of a Magazine style pin up. Show casing their Male Model type performer. People would buy LPs cause of the cover alone. But with Rock music maturing, That got played out. I have to say that the six most impressive LP Covers for Elvis where in my opinion these.

Great work. It does look much better than the official release.

I love you guys in this forum. To point out that the photo was from the warm up show and as such should not be used on the cover is an observation from a factual level that i can only I hope to reach one day. Brilliant!

Agree with your choices, I've only disagree with the MSG LP, there were better pics from EOT anyhow, if they were really not able to get a pic from MSG. I would definitively switch that one for the ON STAGE. Memphis To Vegas/Vegas to Memphis, as well as King Creole, are fine to me. Graceland, or as it is know better: Live at the Mid South Coliseum, and His Hand In Mine are acceptable in its own way.

About your comment on How Great Thou Art, I have always regretted how one of Elvis finest albums has one of the ugliest covers ever. It is to notice also how on the From Elvis in Memphis, even with a great cover, they managed to blew it with a '63 pic on the back.

Anyway interest to note how, if the tendency was that cover art will be as important as the music, still, lots of people in the 70's considered the cover as something they will throw away and just keep the record. So...

I never cared for the MSG cover, I don't like Elvis' hair coming to such a point in the front!
