I think is a positive thing happening, specially because of the remastering work by Anisini, its a good thing they are minding to keep this album on the market, hope they to the same next year with Elvis is Back!, and so on with a few others, let some of the best Elvis albums to be available for the general audience and not just in the FTD's releases.
But what about marketing? this should be a casual buyer oriented release and so needs a good boost on the marketing area, (remember the 30 #1hits, its not so much about that they were only the hits what made those huge sales, it was the amount of publicity they did), Im saying this cause you can't rely just on the fans to make a good number of sales out of this release, I mean, how many times we got those songs in our collection? Newer fans definitely will go for it, and they should.
For the older fans, maybe a DVD in 5.1 sound, a SACD release, gimme something extra, as I'm personally not buying it, why? cause I got the 90's upgrade CD with all the singles on it, I got the 90's Back In Memphis, the 60's box, the S.M. Anthology, the Memphis Record, so I rather just wait (and I can't wait) for the FTD release of F.I.M and E.I.B. on the classic albums releases.
Anyhow, CD's are about to be finished, any plans for digital release? that's another issue I would like to see. Its like, I think EMI re-releasing all Beatles albums on CD is a good thing, but really? little late isn't it? that would have been great late 90's early this decade. This anniversary rereleases, are really in need of something extra than a CD with improved sound.
I would love to see From Elvis In Memphis with a documentary in the style of what they done with his first Album on the Classic Albums series. Or like the Elvis '56, CD and DVD documentary.
How many times can songs be remastered?!
Another virtually pointless release. It might appeal to the casual fan, someone who's never heard it before. But beyond that, it's of little value save for lining the pockets of BMG.
We have all the songs; it's nothing new.
Getlo - cute'n'cuddly
Some of you all never been down South too much...
I'm gonna tell you a little story, so you'll understand where I'm talking about
Have to admit...it is kind of hard to get too excited about this, no new material..only the promise of a better sound...and that doesn`t always make too much of a difference. I really don`t see there being much of a fuss about this either,as far as marketing the release goes... so who exactly is going to be buying this?? The fans probably have all the songs already..countless times, without a good advertising campaign the general public will not know about it,and even then might not be willing to spend their increasingly scarce money on it. Sorry to be the moaner here but I definitely get the feeling of "here we go again...". Even the most dedicated of fans must be well tired by now of buying the same thing over and over again..... I don`t know...maybe I`m just having one of my more negative days.
Why couldn`t they just have properly remastered all the original albums around the time that the wonders of CD appeared... job done.Make them all available to everyone that wants to collect Elvis recorded work.....job done. Maybe with that as a starting point we could now be looking forward to a double CD of outtakes and interesting material from `69.... with at least some bit of work put into the presentation and selling/hyping of the new release.... Do they really think that we will buy everything just because it`s got a new name? Doesn`t bode well for the future of Elvis` music....at least not the "official" side of it anyway.
If you have those songs and albums so may times...than don't buy it!
I think it's a pretty fine release, specially it's released on the main label, and the casual buyer finally gets something new! instead of all the best of cd's...
And this along with his first real album is the best work he ever put on record..it deserves a upgraded cd release..or even better..a sacd...with 5.1 surround sound..
A sacd is much more than a adjusted bass and treble.
Ever heard a sacd with multi-channel sound? it's the best sound possible..almost if you are in the studio with the artist or band.
A shame that the public never had the will to buy those sacd discs...but with the bleuray cd coming...this could change..
CD's are dead.
If the improved sound means, higher volume, better calibrated bass and treble, forget it, I'm not interested.
If the sound improvement means what they did with "Suspicious Minds" in 30 #1 Hits, I might be tempted. (Or maybe just download the dam thing from some blogger on the net).
If they release the thing in SACD or in DVD 5.1, then I will buy it.
Most likely, better sound will mean this time just higher volume mix, so, I will totally skip this one.
As I said, I will wait for FTD releasing those albums in the classic series.
Vinyl almost disappeared as CD's took over the market in the 80's, Dj's keept them alive, and then it was realized there's a sound quality on them hard to improve, they acquired a vintage quality, and today, any band that takes themselves enough serious releases their CD in Vinyl for collectors.
The main advantage of the Cd's, as the buyer, were, its cheap, lots of songs on a single one, you play it in your car, discman, and then you can even burn your own selection which was the one thing we missed from cassettes tapes.
With the Ipod, an other digital music players and devices of storage, those stopped being advantages, as these gives you much more on those areas.
The only thing a CD is needed now is when you need/want a physical object to sell/have. A plastic case with a cheap unimaginative booklet will not be enough then, as you can get that and more for download.
DVD 5.1, SACD, or collectors stuff containing a hard cover rip off book like Dylan´s latest on the Bootleg series, or stuff like what Radiohead did with the In Rainbows thing. Stuff for a very specific market will go on, like the FTD.
So yes, Vinyl and CD will be around for a long time, but not as the generic way of musical distribution, as it is the case of this forgettable Elvis release. But there's still another decade to go for that, yes CD is still the generic way of musical distribution.
This Memphis release as it is not at all for the long time Elvis fans, but directed to the casual buyer or recent fan, should be pushed with more publicity, and to be accessible and promoted via digital music stuff in order to reach a bigger audience than the sick F that will buy these for the twentieth time. And to be released in physical form in something more than in a bla plastic case to get some of the older fans buying.
