Thread: What tour would you have filmed?

What tour would you have filmed?

As everybody knows, the following Vegas / Tours were officially filmed, at least in part:

    Las Vegas: August 1970 (frorTTWII)
Tour: April 1972 (for ON TOUR)
Hawaii: January 1973 (for ALOHA FROM HAWAII)
Tour: June 1977 (for CBS SPECIAL)

In retrospective, which tour / Vegas / Tahoe would you have filmed?
Most of you would say - all of them!! But if you had to choose one, which one and why?

If I l had to choose just one, I would have filmed the December 1976 tour. From the 8mm films and the audio recordings available, one can notice how fit Elvis was after a very mediocre year of touring. EP was also in great spirits and had a 5 star repertoire with songs like 'The first time ever I saw your face', 'Rags to Riches' 'Mystery Train-Tiger Man' and 'Unchained Melody' among others.

Just a couple of weeks earlier, Elvis was in Las Vegas, his last ever engagement. Many felt that he was not up to it having sprung an ankle early on and sitting down for most parts of many shows. From photos available he looked bloated and tired.

However, for the last tour of the year, Elvis was back! The tour ended with one of the very best shows EVER at Pittsburgh on New Year's Eve.

A film of this tour would have given the public a 41+ year Elvis in great form and in great spirits. Unfortunately, by the next tour, the performance level started to drop as did his physical state.

    I don't think I would've filmed any additional tours

what we got was good enough imo and if they filmed him too much Elvis would be in danger of being overexposed.

looking back I would've filmed the 1971 tour for a documentary instead of the April 72 tour but hindsight is 20/20

If you want me to chose, than I would say Tour: April 1972 (for ON TOUR)

Why: The name is the program, showing Elvis on tour. Aloha was a single event and TTWII was only in Vegas. Therefor I would pick April 1972.

    December 1976???! When there's a wealth of stuff from 1970 or 1971?

You can't go past the September and November tours of 1970, by all accounts as good as Vegas the previous August.

I would like to have seen the Sept 70 tour filmed.
I tried to go to the Sept,10 1970 show in St Louis.
They sold out in hours. But a friends father got her tickets so she and her parents went. She talked about the show for months-and she eventually went to all 3 St. Louis shows she said 9-10-70 was the best overall for excitement and Elvis really rocking. She gave the middle show in June of 73 the best vocal performance she heard. We both went to the 3-22-76 show-and for me it was a good show-for her it was the less of the 3 she had seen.

HANDS DOWN -- Vegas 1969!!!! Ohhh, to be there when he returned on July 31, 1969.....

But as far as concert 'tours,' definitely would have wanted to film both fall tours in 1970!!!! It would have been absolutely awesome to catch Elvis on his first tour with all of his energy, humor and talent!!!!!

Without a doubt...1969 in Las Vegas. It still surprises me that nobody ever filmed at least one of the shows....Did this happen because it came so soon after the `68 Comeback Special???

Why not December 1976? I give reasons why I chose that tour:

    1. Repertoire-wise TTWII and On Tour cover 99% of the songs that were done 1970 - 1972

    2. After the Aloha (1973) we have a sharp drop with the CBS (1977).

    3. The December 1976 shows were good (not as physical as 1970, obviously) but Elvis moves quite well, is in GGGRRREEEAAATTT voice, and most of all in high spirits. Why not give the fans, and most of all the general public a film / video / dvd of Elvis' later years that is good on all aspects.

    4. The repertoire has many changes from TTWII, On Tour and the Aloha

    5. Stage wear is very different from TTWII, ON Tour & Aloha

    6. CBS, Elvis & Parker thought that June 1977 was a good idea. So my option is definetely better.

    It's just an opinion!!

This is a very difficult choice for me... I would love to see both the tour from 70-72 and 1976! There's incredible stuff from both seasons and would be thrilling watch.

In addition to what is there, I would go with November 1971, because of the new cape addition, the energy, and the reprise of "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
