Elvis, in my opinion, has a lot of lost #1's.
This is my favorite Elvis song and it shocked me when I learned that it never got released in the 50's but was released in the mid 60's when he was basically by then a movie star. Why did they hold this classic rocker back for so long? I know it was pretty successful when released but it would have definitely been much bigger and probably a #1 hit in the 50's. You can hear where Paul McCartney got his bass rhythm from in that song too. IMO I think it's his best rocker he did.

I think the song could have possibly been a number one hit if released in 1959
it sounded dated when it came out in 1964 but did pretty well.
never much liked the song
The fast version should have been release in the 50's. I am sure it would have charted well.
The 1964 release sounded like Elvis was tired on that track.
Different tempo, I know.

Every man has a flaming star
"Ain't That Loving You Baby" is not the only example for such a treatment by RCA, another one is "Tell Me Why"
"If you're an Elvis fan, no explanation is necessary; If you're not an Elvis fan, no explanation is possible.“
(George Klein)
I like this song-my band used to do it.
Work in Progress!
I think their are two versions of Ain't that loving you
one is the fast tempo that was released in 64 and the other is a slower more bluesy tempo that was released on the 1985 Reconsider Baby
that's what I've been told but have never heard the version on Reconsider Baby.
I've also heard the version on Reconsider Baby is better
is this correct?
Here are 2 versions of Ain't that Loving You Baby at different tempos.

You ask how long I love you, I'll tell you true,
until the Twelfth of Never, I'll still be loving you
