ttwii special edition

along with everybody else i bought ttwii special edition dvd and of course i love it.
my query is this, on my copy the end credits are shown alongside the clip of elvis backstage with sammy davis jnr among others.
last week i turned the tv on and ttwii special edition was playing,it was nearly at the end and i decided to sit down and watch it,everythig was fine and the end creits came on alongside a great clip of elvis singing are you lonesome tonight whilst sitting on a stool and playing guitar,im not sure but i think he was wearing the chain suit,but it was a great piece of film that i've never seen before.
obviously there are a couple of versions of this film,does anyone have any information on this,i would surely appreciate it.

Yes, the 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' clip originally appeared on the Special Edition credits roll, but was substituted by the backstage footage for DVD release (some copyright issue if I'm not mistaken)

Somewhat surprising that it is still being televised, when it was broadcast here on satellite a while back (prior to the DVD release or just after) it was screened with the backstage footage credit roll even then.

A great clip, I believe the same segment was used in Elvis The Concert at some point.

I have this version on a VHS tape - as was first broadcast on TCM in the USA. I doubt that this version was shown on "Elvis in Concert" - I think a still picture of Elvis singing this song was used on the " Suspicious Minds" -The Memphis Anthology CD.

I'm pretty sure I have footage of an Elvis The Concert with that 'sat on a stool' performance of AYLT, (which is why I mentioned it above) would have to double check later.

The photo on the cover of The Memphis Anthology however is from 1969, the footage on the credit rolls was from August 1970. (not sure if you meant it might be a photo of the TTWII performance or just that he was performing AYLT in that photo aswell)

The version of AYLT was indeed the version cut out of TTWII-se.
When "the concert" tour was in Belgium last year i was suprised looking at this "new" version from 1970.

It was mostly close up,but fantastic all the way .

It was the version where he said" Now we got that out of the way,we can go on with the show..."

That version of Are You Lonesome Tonight indeed is part of the Elvis The Concert shows!

It's a very nice piece of film, which always reminds me of the famous laughing version of that song.

Yes, I'm almost positive it was in the show when I saw it 6+ years ago.

You are 100% right Spinout....originally, ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT was going to be included on the home video releases of TTWII - SE, but due to copyright issues, the footage was removed and replaced with the backstage footage.

In fact, according to various sources, copyright issues were supposedly the main reason why the extra hour of footage that was supposed to be included on the DVD release of TTWII - SE, which was promised to fans when the movie premiered at The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis during Elvis Week 2000 (I was in the audience for the premiere screening), was not included when the home DVD version came out! Then later on, it was stated that it was more of an economic issue as to the reason the extra hour of footage was deleted from the home DVD version. This seems to make more sense, at least to me....why on Earth would EPE give fans an EXTRA HOUR of footage on the DVD version, when they couldn't charge some outrageously extra large price for it? Since the movie is distributed by Warner Bros., I would assume that WB sets the prices for the customers to purchase the DVD releases...and if I had to make a guess, I would assume that EPE made it too financially straining for WB to be able to include that bonus footage, without having to charge customers $50.00 (or more) for the DVD! However, this is PURE speculation on my part....

But I digress....
