Thread: So was the Christmas Duets a success or failure?

So was the Christmas Duets a success or failure?

Considering it didn't have much promo at all I would say it was somewhat a success. By far not a failure or flop. It peaked at #17 on Billboard's 200 and has had a pretty good running with 11 weeks now. It was #24 last week but this week dropped it's farthest yet to #55. But then again the Christmas holidays are over with so maybe that played a factor in it falling so far. I don't know what the overall sales numbers are yet but looking at its chart positions I would say it succeeded it's purpose. Although it failed to have a good showing on the Top Country Charts by only peaking at #63 with a 5 week running to date. That would have to be its only failure since all the duet partners were top rated Country female singers. Who knows how far it would have gone with some commitment behind it by the company.

But see, this wasn't meant to be a duets album of the biggest stars of different genres. It was meant to be what it was, a Christmas duets album and of only one specific musical genre and that was country with females only. There are rumors going around by some in the know that a pop genre duets album of stars like you listed is in the works for 09. Time will tell though if that happens or not. The economy could set it back or kill it altogether. Personally I don't like duets with Elvis all that much because it's less Elvis on the song when it's HIS songs to begin with. I do however like the new sounds and overdubs on the duets and wish they would rework the back catalog that way. A lesser known song like 'Lonesome Cowboy' for instance could really use a new upgrade instrumentation like they did on Xmas Duets.

The CD has been a great success. More than 400.000 copies sold.

Elvis and Martina McBride "Blue Christmas" has had more than 1,000,000 hits in about five weeks! on youtube.com

    I didn't purchase it.

I prefer to just listen to elvis' voice.

But any successful Elvis project is a good thing. Helps to keep his music and memory alive.

For me this album was a failure.
All the songs were concipated as solo recordings and they tried to turn them into duets. In some rare cases it works (Lisa's duets for example), but here no.

I didn't buy it either. I can look at the youtube examples.

But we still have the beautiful original 1957 Album, vinyl and CD to appreciate.

Elvis' Christmas Album was the first album I ever purchased, December 1957. Half a weeks earnings!

I didn't buy it either although I was temped but money was an issue this Christmas. I listened to it on Youtube and liked the sound mixing they did. Although some of the duets you could tell were fake. Elvis' vocals were on a lower range than the female artist on the playback. But nonetheless it was nice hearing new music behind Elvis without him being buried in the mix as was the problem with ALLC. Like the other poster said, as long as it's a hit for Elvis and gets people to talk about him and listen to him then it's a win-win situation for all! And that's what it should all be about.

in Australia it reached number 1 on our country charts so i guess it was a success here.
I never looked for trouble but I never ran.

Canada also did really well so i would say it was a success.

I think you have to ask this question on 2 levels-
1-was it a chart and financial success?
2-were the duets musically mixed well?

Personally, it was not my favorite, but it put Elvis back on the charts and in the spotlight, so it would appear that it accomplished what it set out to do.

I bought the CD as a collection item...haven't opened it and probably never will as I tend to resent anyone except for Lisa being in a duet with Elvis...but if it puts him in the spotlight in a positive way then I say go for it.

Considering it peaked at #17 and sold over 400,000 copies then that alone would make it successful. It'll be another gold award presented by the RIAA at Graceland soon.

I bought the CD and really liked it. So, for me it was a success. How well do other Christmas albums do, except Elvis?

that still leaves the other question?

I may not have opened the CD but I did hear the duets on a link that was posted here.

As to the 2nd question, did the duets mix well? Not in my opinion. Few of the vocalists meshed well with Elvis' voice. High pitched voices which most have nowadays do not compliment Elvis' rich tones.
