Elvis states split on support for new US President: There are four American states most associated with Elvis: Tennessee; Mississippi; Nevada and Hawaii. Not surprisingly the southern states of Tennessee and Mississippi voted Republican (John McCain), while Nevada gave its vote to the new (historic) President, Barack Obama, and the island state of Hawaii is expected (votes not in yet) to also favor the incumbent President. Considered to be more Republican than Democrat during his lifetime, it is a moot (but interesting) point on where Elvis would have stood today on US politics.

Elvis did all of his early TV appearances in New York City and his record setting shows at the Garden in 72 and is tied to NY.

Elvis was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas while in basic training for the US Army.

Elvis made all 31 of his movies in Hollywood, California and had several homes there and has just as much recoginition there as he does anywhere.

Elvis played to his largest crowd ever in Detroit on New Year's Eve in 75.

I think you have a point about California- Elvis spent a lot of time there during the movie years and had homes there ( I think the amount of time he spent and the association to average people was what the author of this story was alluding to in this article)
Elvis only spent limited time in his career New York,the Detroit show at the Pontiac Silverdome (in Pontiac, Michigan, a satellite city of Detroit.)although his largest crowd it is not easily associated with Elvis. But the states the author mentions are very identifiable with Elvis-
Tennesee(Graceland),
Mississippi (Tupelo hometown),
Nevada (lengthy Vegas engagements),
Hawaii (frequent vacations, 3 movies made there, Pearl Harbor Memorial benefit, Aloha worldwide special)
But I think you are correct California should have been included.

Well they might say Elvis was Republican because he was supposedly ultra-conservative and dogmatic concerning women's rights and such, resisting the change for the better so to say.

One show. Hardly a significant association, even if it was the largest crowd of his career. He also played once in South Carolina.

He played Bloomington twice for instance, so would you include Indiana in Elvis lore? He played 14 times there overall (way more than New York).

Elvis was inducted into the Army at Fort Chaffee, Ft. Smith, AR, in March 1956. My personal opinion which is just that, Elvis was not a political person. Maybe he was like some of us.....party affiliation....black or white....it doesn't matter, just how he/she leads our country.

If I'm not mistaken Elvis never voted did he? If he did, I really don't think he would vote Democrat. Not that he was a republican or anything but he was conservative and the democratic party is not in the least bit conservative anymore.

His attitudes towards women; hippies and counter culture etc.

Read his letter to Nixon for the bet example of where he was at at the time.

Elvis may have had conservative attitudes towards women who played an important role in his life. The Hippies and such movements, I don't know, but couldn't it be that his dislike mainly was a self-serving declaration because he felt his career somehow threatened by them? His letter to Nixon would be a result of this as well. And didn't Elvis himself start a sort of counterculture with his music and performing in the 50s? At least I think he led his life marginally conservative.

That's probably part of it, yes. Like a lot of older(ish) people then - and now - he regarded the hippies as a threat to democracy.

I feel the same way now when I see protestors at the G20 summits, or those stupid greenies. Run 'em down with a tank, I say.
