I ran across this explanation on internet trolls. An internet practice I despise.
Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant perhaps with multiple IDs, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings, and upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they — and the troll — understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group.
My question how can anyone who does this type thing-in any way, shape or form feel justified in doing so? Is it low self esteem or just the need to disrupt?
I actually feel that it's a bit of both, plus a sure-fire way to get attention. These people are probably not much in real life, so they get their kicks off doing things such as this. Goodness knows we have certainly seen our fair-share here at TCB.Originally Posted by KPM

To answer KPM's question, I also feel that a multiple ID used needs the attention and disrupts like a child who will misbehave to gain that attention from it's parents be it positive or negative. Is it possibly a case of arrested development or insecurity as to their importance in the world?
In any case, I feel this board isn't a board of psychiatrists and that these people should not be tolerated.....they are in the wrong place.

I agree, but I know what the issue is here: frustration complex pre-puberty. Para-emotional to the second degree. Temporary cyclotymic disturbances may develop parallel in the sub-conscious mind.

First of all....it's utMOM(as in Mother) not utMON. I am utmom2008 on every Elvis site on the internet and on Youtube. My given name is Rosanne. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand this. I would bet my "A-double S" that YOUR given name is neither Genie OR Alladin!

Multiple IDs refers to people who are one person-but have more than one screen persona-in other words they post at the same place as 2 different people. I have a screen name KPM-but my real name is Ken.

I only post as KPM. The purpose usually in having multiple IDs is to back up ones own posts. Screen name-1 agrees with Screen name-2 but in reality they are one and the same person. It is a problem at a lot of sites.
Trolling is someone who just wants to upset a forum or message board.
I had never heard the term trolling until a few days ago-but multiple IDs I have seen at several sites (I think we have had this at this site before) and they also seem to just want to cause trouble.
Also I am not Roseanne we are 2 separate people if that is what you are asking in your last remark.

Not sure about the multiple accounts , but i have seen people just come on here to cause trouble or stir the pot, but everywhere you go that is always going to happen.

Multiple accounts and multiple ID's go hand in hand Jen. It means one person opens several accounts and signs in under different names pretending to be different people.
It's not a nice practice that's for sure!
