Barack Obama is elected President of the United States

The first ever African American has won the US election and is the new president of the United States. I have to admit that I never thought I would see this day. But while I am happy for all African Americans I am skeptical of his views and inexperience. How will he handle the situation with Iran and North Korea? How will he handle Iraq? How will he rebuild the broken economy?

I wonder what Elvis would have thought of this historical day? Just 40 years ago Elvis was singing for peace and unity with If I Can Dream. Now his and Dr King's dream has come true.

i doubt that if elvis was here he would have voted for Obama not that he is racist but he tended to be conservative republican

despite the political standpoints of Obama, America clearly voted for optimisme and the desire for a bright future. The fact that he's a young, black person shows it even more.

So without judging republicans, this election showed that democracy is still alive. Just as Elvis, Obama is right now living the American dream: you can become the president of the USA, despite your background or race.

I wish him, and all Americans all the best for the coming years. There's a lot of work to be done.

Regardless of personal beliefs and desired outcomes for this election, there is no denying the magnetism of this guy and it is hard to not be excited and optimistic. It is also a source of pride that my country elected an African American to the highest office in the land.

Elvis had conservative leanings obviously but I don't get the impression he followed politics enough to really be classed as more Democrat or Republican -- he never voted, after all. But I think his philosophy can be summed up pretty well in one line from his letter to Nixon: "I Call It America And I Love It."

By the way, this is something of a worldwide event so it is natural that we would want to talk about it here. We normally discourage any talk of politics at all because such discussions usually go south. Being an exceptional happening, this thread is exceptional and I would just kindly ask that negative comments be kept out of this thread. Thx.

i stayed up till the small hours watching the votes come in i think its fantasatic the barack got in it was time for a change and obama birngs that change martin lther king tried to bring the change 50 yeras ago and its finally come true i think the victory speach was full of hope and all we can do is wait and see what happens next

It's funny to me that you posted this because I just bought the Let's Be Friends CD a couple days ago and I was playing this song yesterday thinking how it really is a good song, not just for a movie song and not fitting only into the movie context (though the play on the word 'habit' which is clever is otherwise missed). Being elected as the president of the United States will confront him with situations bringing things he's never quite prepared for.

Interests of oil and weapon industry are something to keep in mind and if one would resist such policy you'd have to stay on your toes like a midget at a urinal.

What has this guy accomplished? Nothing. He spews rhetoric and the Obama followers listen and believe everything they hear without question.

Obama has his hands full, I wish him good luck! I didn't think highly of Bush, but he was there for two terms (8 yrs) and it will very hard to undo the damage he's done...just my opinion...

Like most of you have said, we will see how well Obama does after 4 years! It will not only affect the U.S. but other countries, as well.

I am not the Obama fan that my kids are-but he seems smart, chrismatic and is tough enough to have endured all he has in this campaign. I have heard Repubican pundits calling his campaign the best run in modern history-high praise from the opposition. His spread the wealth comments to Joe the Plumber were not smart and they were not answered well by his campaign.
The idea that he was starting a "new program" to take money and give it to people who paid no tax was just not true. The Earned Income Tax Credit program was started in 1975 by Republican Gerald Ford and every president since then has increased it. It does give refundable credits to working families who do not end up owing any income tax-they do pay all other payroll taxes. Reagan called it a great tool to keep people working and striving to get ahead. Corporations had got refundable tax credits for decades to keep them open and running-this is the same idea for low income working families.
Not once did I hear an Obama spokesman identify where this program started and ask, "Are Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush2 socialists"? It was the perfect answer to this accusation made against Obama. The progressive tax system we have in the US is always moving wealth from one source to another, "bottom-up" and "top-down" How did I get so sidetracked?

But now the fun is over for Obams-he has to actually make good on his promises and handle this economic mess the US (and world) has been in for a good 12 months going back to late 07 and deal the wars on 2 fronts.
Its a tough road to hoe!

I know many members here are not citizens of the US and I am not sure what opinion you may have of our country. Although I am an Obama fan and do not agree with his political platform, I am proud that he has been able to make history as being the first African American president elected of our country. It was only 40 years ago that MLK was shot in Memphis and that was a terrible thing for our country.

But as an American, we still have to respect our current leader. I found this article today and I would like to share it. I am ashamed by the way our citizens treat our president.
