Yes, I agree. I love all the songs on it, and TROUBLE I often consider his last great rock'n'roll hit. (I think he had other greats after that, just not rock'n'roll)
I've been listening to this album a lot lately and it seems to have grown on me the most of the mid 70's work. First of all I absolutely love the sound in this album and have always found it to be the best mix of any Elvis album to date. He seems passionate and committed to the songs he's singing whereas in some of the Stax work he sounds bored and uncommitted.
I really have grown to appreciate the Today album and think it's very underrated. Every song is good with the exception of Fairytale. Just don't like that one. It's way too country. The live version was much more better and better musically arranged.
My favorites are the haunting personal cryout message Pieces Of My Life and the Elton John style ballad Bringing It Back as well as the bluesy Shake A Hand and the lone rocker T.R.O.U.B.L.E.
Anyone else think this album is underrated?![]()

yes
i agree with u
I am so glad FTD came out with the Classic Series of this album
The album is mixed very well and I just wish Elvis would of performed Bringing It Back live
That one is my favorite song of the album
But in my opinion this album is very underrated
I agree that its underated.I think it's some of his finest work from the 70's era.The mix is j ust great! And the songs were great as well. They should of stuck with the formula for this album through the rest of the 70's.
I agree with you on that version of Fairytale. The live version in the ELVIS IN CONCERT album is 100% better. He sounded more comfortable with it by 1977. I also don't like the arrangement on SHAKE A HAND. Too repetitive in my opinion. It could've used some breakdown parts to keep it interesting.

other than that, I love this LP myself and think it's one of my fav 70s LP
I also think that the live version of Fairytale is better than the studio one.But I do love T-R-O-U-B-L-E.......he just rocks the hell out of it.It's one of my favorite rockers by Elvis.
Yes, I also really dig that album:
TROUBLE: as a kid, it used to be my favorite, now I skip it often
And I Love You So: really, really great ballad. Live and studio, just pure excellence
Susan When She Tried: believe it or not, but this is one of my alltime favorite songs
Woman Without Love: blehhh
Shake a Hand: Mwah, nothing special
Pieces Of My Life: a song to listen to. Not fitted just to put it in a random playlist
Bringing It Back: never really grew on me
Green, Green Grass Of Home: please, hand me a bucket
I Can Help: sometimes I like it, many times I quickly skip this one
Fairytales: a fantastic, fun song. During live-performances you can clearly hear Elvis like the song
"A year from now, you'll wish you had started today"

T-R-O-U-B-L-E: It's a fun song. Good rhythm and Elvis in good mood about it.
And I Love You So: A timeless love-song. Couldn't get enough.
Pieces Of My Life: One of the best songs he ever did. Maybe one of the most personal songs.
Green Green Grass Of Home: There's nothing new on it. I mean you can listen to Tom Jones or Dean Martin, there ain't a new interpretion or a new side.
Bringing it Back: Just love it.

Elvis' voice was in great shape in '75. This was a very good album but like many, something of a missed opportunity. I find that I prefer the alternate takes in most cases, which is partly due to the performances themselves and partly due to the better sound -- overall improvement but also I think Elvis' vocal had too much compression applied to it. That's not to mention the absence of overdubs.
T-R-O-U-B-L-E: great song but Elvis' voice sounds tinny, also not the best take. 2 or 3 very audible sniffles from Elvis should have been muted. Pretty embarrassing to hear that on a master take from Elvis Presley, if you ask me. Take 1 rocks and he sounds infinitely better.
And I Love You So: beautiful song, prefer the alternates
Susan When She Tried: didn't used to like this one years ago but I've come around to really liking it.
Woman Without Love: Elvis' performance is fine but IMO it's a stinker of a song...pretty old-fashioned in a sexist sort of way: "a man without love's only half of a man but a woman is nothing at all"...is it just me?
Shake a Hand: again fine singing but the tune just bores the pants off me. It's something in the interminable melody; it sounds almost intentionally boring, I swear.
Pieces Of My Life: just about a perfect Elvis song. Sad as hell but well suited to Elvis in so many ways.
Bringing It Back: this song probably originally struck me as unremarkable but I really dig it and give the highest marks to take 2 (I think it is), which I have said before I believe could do well on the U.S. country charts if released today.
Green, Green Grass Of Home: very nice.
I Can Help: love it, wouldn't change a thing. A one-take wonder if I'm not mistaken.
Fairytale: I don't know if it's so much that it's too country or if it's just overdone to the point of it sounding almost artificially country. OK, maybe "too country" still seems to apply there but what I'm getting at is that I don't generally think songs can be too country; in this case it seems more like a song that's been poorly countrified, if you know what I mean...whatever it is, I agree with those who prefer the live performances. They are definitely done better and his voice is killer on most all of them.
...you won't forget me when I go.
... it really is a good album!
The faster arrrangenment of the live-version of Fairytale wipes out the studio version, no doubt about it.
Shake A Hand is a cool blues song but in my opinion James Burton spoils it as he plays a bit uninspired - as he often did. A very good guitar player, no doubt, but one who didn't really change things - the "Steamroller" solo sounded the same every time he played it. At least in '76 he should have worked on that.
I Can Help and Green, Green Grass are pure copies but Grass fits him better and it was a personal choice, by the way

ur description of the album was perfecto...so in few words ...its a great album one of my favs.......way better than his last *moody blue* album
