Elvis In Concert CBS - A Hit? Apprarently

So it was a hit !!
"How do I get placed in situations like this? Ah hell, I guess it's all part of showbusiness "~ Elvis in his limo on his way to perform in Omaha, NE on June 19th 1977

It was a hit because it was the last footage of Elvis shot. Had this concert been shown prior to his death then I doubt it would have been such a hit as Elvis was slowly becoming irrelevant at the time. Comparing his appearance in Aloha just 4 years earlier with Elvis In Concert is like comparing apples to oranges.

Thats all likely true, but still either way you look at it, CBS Special was a hit...too bad its mainly because we lost elvis...

    What were the ratings exactly?
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley

Of course Elvis' ratings are always going to top Sherrill's.

I agree that the reason that this was such a ratings phenomenon was because is was aired in the wake of his death, which was still very much in the news. His death came as such a shock to so many at such an early age with so many rumors surrounding his death that many tuned in b/c they were curious to see if Elvis looked like he was just months from his death, to see if the rumors that had been written about the drugs were true. Remember, the bodyguard book had already been published and was a very talked book.

Had this concert been on tv and Elvis not died, I do not think that it would have been the ratings phenomenon that it turned out to be.

I still believe this special should be released (officially) on DVD, including the outtakes.

Don't count on it. With Sillerman now in control of the name and likeness, I doubt this will ever see the light of day as an official EPE release. Too much for him to lose.

Agreed Liz, him dying definitley would make the ratings for it go up, just to see what he looked like before his death.

I believe the same thing Steve.

It's not like we have so much pro shot footage of Elvis as it is, and EPE knows this, and I still believe they have the bulk of the film in their hands, hopefully one day when they have released about all the footage there is, we will get it.

Agreed. most of the general public don't even know what Elvis the CBS Special from 1977 is anymore...and they've released queit abit of footage from it on the great performances video, and elvis by the presley's already so stop trying to act like it never happened and accept the fact Elvis was overweight and sick and release it already.

I think we're likely to see a deluxe addition of Elvis On Tour before we see an official Elvis In Concert release.

As long as TTWII, EOT, and CBS get deluxe treatment on DVD before my life is over I'd be happy.

I can tell you that we fans who were alive back then were not having the usual parties or get togethers to see this last special. (at least in my area) It was so sad, the idea that, this was it-he was gone. Then to see him in such physically bad shape compared to just 7 years before it was heartbreaking.
Not to mention the people at work or friends who knew you were a fan and all of them had to comment to you at how "bad he looked" or how "heavy he had become" even how "messed up" he seemed. It was a horrid time IMO

Maybe we all should make a petition , like they did with Elvis stamps ,if its on high demand who knows.. they might give up and eventually have it all on DVD , with nice and super clear pictures and sounds ....Just an idea.

I know EPE probably don't want to officially release this footage due to Elvis phisical condition at that time...i think that MANY of us have move on beyond that.
