Do you like the first version of Heartbreak Hotel in 1956,the version of the 68 Comeback Special or live later in 1970?What did you vote?

I may get shot for this but I prefer the 1970 versions of "Heartbreak Hotel" over even the '56 or '68 versions. James Burton's guitar licks are smokin'!!

    68. Elvis was working on his comeback and was giving his all. Also his voice was much older and he sounded better IMO.
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley

I like all three incarnations, and in the '70s it was perhaps the most performed '50s song that received more respectful treatment than others (he did the same for songs like "Tryin' To Get To You," "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy," "My Baby Left Me," and even "A Big Hunk O' Love," but they were all performed much less frequently). It was even a highlight in 1976 and 1977 concerts, the way he sang it. And it was supremely cool in '68...I really like that alternate opening, too, on the aborted (or not recorded, at least) first attempt.

I'd have to go with 1956, though. There're obviously not many recordings of it that we have from then but, apart from the classic oddness of the original single, I've always had a soft spot for the version from the March 17 Dorsey show.
    I'm a roving roustabout...

Now me of all people can appreaciate elvis' output of work in 1977, but to say that the versions from 1977 which weren't even that often, come anywhere close to that of the version from 1956 that changed the world of music is insane IMO!

The scream and echo of the 1956 version-so very different from most music of the time is the one I choose.

70 because of how incredibly slow and emotional it is

Bradley, Its great to see your comments on this one, of course you are so right.

For us here in the UK that record was the first time we had heard Elvis, an electrifying experience and one that changed mine and Millions of others lives forever(Thank The Lord) what followed was a phenomenom the likes of which we will never see again, you can keep your Beatles & Jackson,Elvis has passed over but his music and image will live on forever the others have made nothing like the lasting impression left to us by our man..Long may he reign..

Had to go with 1956. It's that haunting in his voice that gets me everytime!
