    Huh?

    1973. January 14th, 12.30am local time.

Audience was Hawaii, the far east/Japan and parts of Australia (live); Europe on one-day delay and America had an edited telecast the following April.

It's a 'locked' topic but here is the thread that Getlo posted to set everyone straight on the actual viewership statistics for the Aloha show. There is absolutely no way whatsoever that 1.5 billion people saw Aloha on January 14, 1973 or even on April 4, 1973 when it was shown here in the U.S.

Although it's a great achievment for Elvis personally, it's another situation of EPE/fans making it out to be more important than it actually was - in other words....it's all hype by EPE and fans.

Well, not so much more important as such ... just more wide-reaching.

This is true. I just worded it incorrectly.

Correct. More like 2.5 billion people wasn't it?

Well any numbers for programs telecast -Aloha, last episode of MASH, down to Gilligans Island are just estimates based on things like the Nielsen ratings which poll people during telecast hours. In my opinion Aloha was a huge deal back in 73. Satellite broadcasts were not something you thought about in terms of entertainers-you thought about space exploration and military applications for it.
Because of the differing time zones and NBC wanting the show to be in the "prime market time" for each zone it was split up as it was.
I would have stayed up late or got up early to see it live as it happened(which ever it would have took)
I can tell you in my house in 73- 8 of us watched it on the same set. My aunt had a party at her house for some of her Elvis fan friends. Many many people saw this show-even if not at the same time.

2.5 billion out of a 1973 world population of 3.9 billion? No way, Jose.

Then remove all the countries that didn't take the show; then remove all the people who didn't have TVs etc; then remove all the people who chose not to watch; then remove every city in Australia, except for Sydney and Melbourne (the only Aussie cities to see it live) ...

The 1.5 billion figure ... the only time it was ever mentioned was in the pre-publicity for the show. Parker said a "potential audience of 1 billion", but he just pulled that out of his hat. It has never been verified by any TV ratings system ... mainly because the figure would have been impossible to attain. That has lead to the erroneous comparison between Aloha and the 1969 moon landings ratings, which have been verified.

Also, Aloha was not the first performance to be beamed live around the world via satellite. That honour belongs to The Beatles: 1967's All You Need Is Love. It was, however, the first full concert beamed live.

And this in no way detracts from the historical importance of the show.

Oops, thought we were talking about burgers served by McDonalds, Chico.

Aloha was seen in 1973 by 1.5 billion people in the U.S. alone.

I don't mean to stray off topic but since this thread is about AFH I have a question I've always wondered about. When Elvis perfromed Aloha in January was it a big deal in the US even though they didn't get to see it, or was the April edited telecast a more exciting night for Elvis fans in the US?

    Are you serious ?

They make it big because it was probably the biggest event of Elvis' life career wise, close with the 68 comeback special.

I don't see no problem with them making the Aloha From Hawaii broadcast seem important, as it was, indeed very important to elvis' career and still is. Definitley a milestone IMO!

I think you would have to ask someone that question who was there and witnessed it ?
