Thread: Elvis Greatest Professional Accomplishment

I voted for "'68 Comeback Special" because it was his big return. By 1968, it had been more than 7 years since Elvis had appeared on stage in front of a live audience. So this was the BIG RETURN. The return of the brilliant singer who rocked the world in the 1950s and who concetrated mostly in his movie career in the 60s. He rebonded with his fans. He reminded them of who he was! It was as if he found himself again...

His greatest achievement is not on the list. That would be the cultural revolution he created back in 1956.His impact changed everything from then on.Nothing he or anybody else did after, could top that.He actually did change the world.

Agree 100% with you Jak, very well said.

Difficult to choose ! all of these options can be a turning point in his achievements from different aspects . Can't we choose 2 or 3 ?!!!

    I agree with you stranger!

Jak you made me backtrack once again because you are absolutely right. As Lennon said, "Before Elvis There Was Nothing". I would like to add "After Elvis There Still Isn't Anything".

This had to have an enormous esteem boast for him b/c I think not being educated made him feel uncomfortable when not in his comfortable bubble. I've read in several books that he carried this award around with him everywhere he went when he toured and would show it to others. Even the pictures of him accepting the award and making his speech show a very humble man which comes across in the pictures.

As far as professional achievements go, I would consider this a more 'personal' achievement.

It wasn't broadcast worldwide.....once again, here are the facts surrounding the myth of Aloha being broadcast worldwide:

    Aloha Viewership

1968 Elvis gives one of the greatest performances in history. Greil Marcus called it music that bleeds. The 68 special is widely credited as being the first unplugged performance on t.v. and starting the trend for the M.T.V unplugged series

1969 return to live performances Elvis was on fire

1971 Elvis was only 36 years old when he received the grammy lifetime achievement award making him the youngest reciepent ever.

1971 The Jaycess award was a nice achievement as well.

Elvis record sales supposedly all in all Elvis has sold 1 billion records world wide and that is really fantastic and quite an achievement

    I will agree.

And It's not fair to say that Elvis' greatest achievment was that a lot of people saw him on TV at the same time.. Because the fact that the show was broadcast via sattelite has nothing, at all, to do with Elvis.

It's also not fair to say it because it wasn't broadcast worldwide to everyone at the same time....

Aloha wasn't broadcast or viewed at one time all over the world--this has been covered numerous times here before.

On top of his voice? Not totally. Sure, it was still there on songs like "Hurt" and "How Great Thou Art" but--the 1977 Elvis was a far cry from the Elvis of 1970 or earlier. The vibrato in his voice was uncontrollable on certain songs.

although a good concert, The Aloha is greatly overhyped. The actual viewingnumbers haven't been made official, and the '1 billion viewers' number is something that started it's own life.

The amount of people who saw the show really live were those living in Japan and some countries nearby. America followed months later, Europe even later.

I voted for the 68 Special. It put Elvis back in the spotlights as a legit artist and entertainer. Great songs would follow it. The Aloha was a peak and the start of a fast decline.

The Aloha was a 'poor' excuse not to let Elvis perform outside the US, while the NBC Special showed Elvis rebelling against the expectation of the Colonel and the big wigs.

The Grammy award does nothing for me. Knowing Elvis has just a few, while modern artists win more of them in just one year..... that says enough about the worth of that award.

Sales achievements.... well, those are great, just as all the awards. Eventually there may be other artists (not likely though) who will sell more or set new records. That will never, ever make them the new King. Elvis is bigger than salesnumbers.

You know, I find many of your post hard to believe.

What about Are You Lonesome Tonight, you mean how he messes the whole song up by laughing through it like he had done a million times before, I think you are just trying to stir up stuff with some of the things you say but thats just me. Interesting avator choice aswell.

I know all about that Mr. Trout I know Aloha was seen in several European countries the next day and was broadcast in the U.S. in April. It was seen by a worldwide Audience though not all at the same time. In my post I didn't say it was.
