Are we sure there were two versions?
Maybe a button fell off.
I know this suit gets ridiculed a lot for its pizza design and unflattering look for Elvis' weight, but i think it is quite regal and would have been fine if he was looking better
This suit is Elvis' finest ever. Period. Just perfect.
One version of this suit was made in 1974 with 3 buttons and another version was made in 1977 with only 2 buttons on sleeves.

During Elvis last shows from May until June 26 the "3 buttons version" was prepered for Elvis by his crew for every new show (cleaning, ironing etc.). Elvis very seldom used the same suit two days in a row, but during his final shows he did for unclear reasons. He probably felt comfortable in the Mexican Sundial Suit with only 2 buttons on sleeves?

I was never that fond of it until I seen it up close at the Jumpsuit exhibit at Graceland. I could see in person up that close just all the work that went into it and how much nicer the thing looks then it does on TV.

Yes, that suit is so beautiful!:rule: I love it... wonder why?

Only one version.a button fell off.
Mexican Sundial Jumpsuit (1974-1977) aka the Pizza. First worn in 1974 and then rested. It was most popular during 1977 where Elvis virtually wore it to every show during the later stages.
It was speculated that there might have been more than one Sundial suit due to the missing buttons on the sleeves in May/June 1977. This has however been cleared up by Gene Doucette who commented that there was only one of this suit made.

Wrong. There was only one (1) version of this suit made. Ask Leroy. He spoke with Gene Doucette (Gene designed the suit--he should know how many versions there are).
Agreed.
They're mistaken. There is only one. Gene Doucette designed just the one (1) suit in 1974.
I responded to this post last night:-

Hi Billy, It is not a question of me not being right, it is a question of whether Gene Doucette is right. Seeing as how Gene designed the suits and did the embroidery, I'm pretty certain that he would remember if there were two suits made?
Leroy went to see Gene Doucette and Bill Belew in Amsterdam a couple of years ago and had a long conversation, many myths were dispelled and names of suits were corrected etc. Leroy put the question of the two Sundial Suits and Gene said that there was only 'one' made.
Elvis wore this suit more than any other, there were more signs of ware and tear than any other, hence the missing buttons. To be exact there were 3 buttons on each cuff (both sides) giving a total of 12, some went missing, possibly fans who knows, but the suit was repaired and the buttons then went to two on all sides giving a total of 8.
I have no wish to get into any argument when the information has come from the designers. As far as I'm concerned this issue has been discussed and answers given.
Please have a look at the photo below, one of Leeches from 24.05.77
If you look at the cuff on the outside you can see two, where as when you look at the inside you can clearly see three!
Would this suit have been designed in such a way? Highly unlikely...
Another shot from the 23.05.77 plus a shot from April/May 77 with the left hand inside cuff button missing compare to the right hand!

Wrong, as it was said by other members that Gene Doucette and Bill Belew have stated that only one suit was made. I know a fan who owns a button from the suit went it came off in Savannah along with some stones. The suit was worn so often that the suit was really falling apart. Hence the fact you see buttons in different numbers from show to show. There was never two suit. It is a fact that Elvis did have 2 or more suits of the same suit but after the 1974 range only one suit that was know of had 2 suits and that was the flame suit. It is the only one that has two suits.
He looks good in it in 1974.http://www.elvis-collectors.com/cc1974-1.html
If only 1 Mexican Sundial Suit:
*Elvis would very seldom use the same jumpsuit day after day. Why did he do that so often in 1977 and not the other years?
*If buttons fell off why wasn't they replaced in any way?
*How come both sides of the jumpsuit lost its buttons (at the same time)?
If you look closely on this picture there don't seem to have been a third button - just my openion.

I respect that there is a theory that there were two suits as it does indeed seem strange for Elvis to have used just the one suit for so long!
However, what reason would there be for Gene and Bill to lie about there only being one suit, what would they have to gain?
Did you have a look at the photo's I posted on the Mexican Sundial thread? You can clearly see that there is a button missing on both arms! Clik HERE
Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one...
Hi there Elvis fans.
I'm not saying that Gene and Bill lie. I'm just saying that I'm not 100% convinced. It's 30 years ago. They can even be wrong. I have also been talking with a lot of "inside-folks" from the Elvis gang the last 10 years or so and know a lot about how thins were when Elvis was on tour. It was not normal for him to use the same outfit night after night.
If i'm wrong, well i can live with that! Thanks for info anyway.
No, they don't.
There's no reason not to be. The idea that there were two Sundial suits was dismissed years ago. It was obvious that the only difference was the missing button.
So what?
The designers and makers of the suit would certainly know if they had made more than one of any suit, especially one so important in the Presley saga. They have informed us of previously unknown doubles (Flame Suits, Fringe Suits et al) so the idea that they would not remember a second Sundial does not hold water.
None of these "insiders" would know anything relating to what Elvis wore on tour, except for maybe Joe Esposito. They would have no idea about what the suit-cleaning regimen was.
The Sundial suit was probably the only suit that fitted him reasonably well by the end. Although the King of Spades provided occasional relief, up to the final tour. But for those months in 1977, the only suit he wore was the Sundial, and there was only one version of it. Also, in 1976, the Bicentennial Suits were not always alternated; there were times when he wore the same one two or three nights in a row.
If there was a second version of the Sundial, Graceland would have it in their records and archives (like the two Flame Suits) but they don't, because it does not exist.
Then you'll have to live with that.
Getlo - cute'n'cuddly
The EP'designer Gene Doucette said ; "I made only one "Sundial Jumpsuit" ........
It's clear !!!
