    Polk Salad?

I was wondering if any one here can tell me about Polk Salad. Is it a salad made from turnip leaves? is it something else? I can't find my Elvis cookbook to see if it was in there.

    HI
It is a type of green, or spinach type plant that grows wild in the south. Many people fix it up like spinach or "greens" . My grandfather did. I remember picking it for him. It has berries on it as it grows larger and we were told never to eat them or you would get real sick. We used to have battles with them and they stain clothes and skin pretty bad. I also remember him saying that the plant is too tough to eat when it gets that big also.
Got my family, my kids, my books and my music, I'm good, yeah, I'm good.....

Thanks for the article on Poke Weed Jen...very interesting! I never knew what it looked like and it's nothing like I imagined. I didn't know it had berries for instance.

There is a festival in Louisiana and one in Tennessee.

I tried to get someone in my family to help me pick and cook them, but they keep saying I don't want to do it because if you don't do it right it can be dangerous. And then they ask me why I want to. I just don't have the nerve to say "because Elvis sings it." I could just imagine how they would roll their eyes.

If that is not a family with problems?

I am from Louisiana and I have polk salad in my backyard. Polk Salad is a wild plant that looks kind of like a turnip green. It has pinkish-red stalks. You prepare it the same way you would turnip greens, with the exception that you have to boil it several times to reduce the toxins that are in it. Turnip greens taste MUCH better!!

Yes it can. They were all taken hostage at gunpoint by a monkey named Scatter.

thank you all so much for the info. We don't have anything like polk salad in Australia.
We have a native green called Warrigul greens. Except it doesn't have to be cooked to remove toxins.
