The Best Version Of Steamroller Blues.

I love the version from the excellent FTD-LIVE IN LA BOOK & CD, Elvis sings a totally flawless version with impeccable phrasing and delivery – stunning!

In addition James Burton's blues licks are incendiary and for me, the best version of this song closely followed by the ALOHA FROM HAWAII rehearsal version – what do other members think?

Aloha from Hawaii is the only time i ever heard "Steamroller Blues". So, that's my favorite.

He did "Steamroller Blues" long before he did "Aloha". I think it was the summer of '72 or possibly fall of '72 when he did it for the first time.

I really like the first version he did of it. It's available at Jodrans Elvis World.
I never looked for trouble but I never ran.

It wasn't that long at all. Five months in fact.

The only time Elvis did Steamroller Blues before the Aloha rehearsal was in Vegas, August 7, 1972, midnight show.

As for the best version, I don't think you can beat Cincinnati, March 21st, 1976, 8.30pm show (Released as Holding Back The Years on the Diamond label).

I tend to go for 74 Memphis or the 76 versions which used some great guitar on the intro

Cincinnati, March 21st, 1976 on madison's a new kind of rythm Cd.
"How do I get placed in situations like this? Ah hell, I guess it's all part of showbusiness "~ Elvis in his limo on his way to perform in Omaha, NE on June 19th 1977

    Kind Regards,

To rythmknights–The book is superb, the only minus is some of the pics used are slightly blurry but you get a good feeling for the show from these.
Elvis looked fantastic in May 74' and to have been there would have been sensational.

The soundboard is a solid show, although bass heavy– but like I said crank up your treble to compensate and listen out for the LED ZEPPELIN namecheck(they were in the audience that night). This FTD release is one of my favourite's from a very eventful year for the king.

You could say about every version from that March '74 tour were great ! Especially Memphis !!

Also I like the Ocotober 1976 versions, basically, for Jerry's bass work at the beginning intro..sounded badd !!

It's small things like that, that make certain performances so special. Like the growl he let's out at the end of Can't Help Falling In Love from May 21st 1977 on the album Elvis Tonight 8:30 !!
