Interesting..! Scatter the chimpanzee was a macho male though, just like all the others..?
But I'm convinced the animals liked him.
interesting things about elvis and the animals he owned
Elvis loved animals of all kinds. He used to say that Dog is God spelled backwards!Over the years he had quite a menagerie at Graceland. Here are a few stories of the animals in Elvis life
Boywas the first dog Elvis acquired shortly after he began to achieve stardom. He always loved dogs, but he could never have one when he was younger, so he made up for that when he became a star
He owned a lot of dogs years , which included : Sherlock,a Bassett Hound, a pair of Great Danes inthe 60’s,Snoopy and Brutus., which Elvis gave to Priscilla . Brutus can be seen playing the role of Albert in the movie Live a Little, Love a Little (1968). The dog died not long after Elvis and Priscilla divorced.Snoopy later became Lisa Marie’s dog. He also owned a Pomeranian namedEdmund which he gave to his aunt Delta Presley Biggs .
In 1975,Get Lo, a Chow, was flown in Elvis' small Jetstar plane to Boston for treatment of a kidney aliment. He stayed there for three months of intensive care and then was flown home, where his treatment continued. Sadly, the veterinarians couldn't cure him.for some time after that, whenever he thought of the little animal, it would bring tears to his eyes.
Muffin was the name of Elvis’ Great Pyrenee dog. A beautiful white dog, he seemed to have an incurably bad temper, which even obedience school couldn’t improve. Even Elvis was bitten a few times.
Stuff was a black Poodle that lived at Graceland. He belonged to Elvis’ aunt Delta Mae, but Elvis grew as fond of the dog as its owner was.Sweet Pea was a tiny dog that Elvis gave to his mother Gladys in 1956. After Gladys’s death, Elvis continued to care for the dog.
Teddy Bear of Zi-Pom-Pom was a pedigreed Poodle given to Elvis by a fan when he was in the army in Germany. Apparently the dog accompanied Elvis back to the States when he returned.
Other dogs over the years included Whoosh, Oswald and, named after one of Elvis' movie characters,a dog named Michael Edwards. Elvis also used to give dogs as gifts to people he loved.
Sweet Pea, a tiny dog he gave his mother Gladys in 1956.
Littlebit was the toy Poodle Elvis gave to his girlfriend Anita Wood in the 50’s.
Honey was the Poodle Elvis gave to his wife Priscilla Presley for Christmas 1962
Puff was the name of a cat he gave Lisa Marie Foxhugh was a Maltese given by Elvis to his girlfriend Linda Thompson in the mid-1970’s Shortly after buying Graceland, Elvis was given several donkeys. The fence around the property hadn't been completed yet so he kept them in the new, empty swimming pool until the fence was finished.
Elvis' mother Gladys had her chickens and there was a turkey named Bowtie.Elvis' father Vernon raised hogs and he smoked and cured pork in the old pump house which Elvis, in later years , would turn into a temporary makeshift firing range.
The Lewis family, which were Elvis fans gave him a squirrel monkey for Christmas 1966. They had bought it from Katz Drug Store and named it Bambi. They were regulars among fans who hung out at the Graceland front gate and they were often invited to the movies with Elvis. It was at the movie theater that they presented the monkey to him. Both Elvis and Priscilla fell in love with the tiny creature and drove back to Graceland playing with it. Twice fans in Australia sent him a wallaby, a type of kangaroo. While he was on the set of "Jailhouse Rock" in 1957 australian fans sent him a wallaby, a type of kangaroo .The same thing happened to him in 1962. He donated both to the Memphis Zoo.
Elvis had several beautiful peacocks until while admiring their reflection in his car, they started scratching the paint. They too found themselves at the zoo. One time Elvis, Vernon and Lamar Fike drove a limo out to Germantown, a suburb of Memphis. There they purchased chickens, ducks and other fowl to stock was becoming their little farm at Graceland. Lamar rode in the back with the livestock to try and control them. However, they flew around and made a huge mess of the back of the limo. Even after cleaning and fumigation it was never the same. Elvis soon replaced the car.
Scatter was a chimpanzee Elvis bought in 1961. He had been owned by Memphis TV personality Captain Bill Killebrew. For a while Scatter would be dressed in his own human-like wardrobe and would party with Elvis and his friends. Just one of the guys. He became hard to control and on the MGM lot one day got away and into producer Samuel Goldwyn's office, which Scatter proceeded to tear apart. He was escorted out by two security officers, one on each side of him. As Alan Fortas put it, "he looked like he was under arrest". Scatter had to be sent back to Graceland.
At one time he had a mynah bird that often made interesting statements about "where Elvis could go".
Elvis owned a number of horses over the years, too many to name them all. Elvis’ love for horses is legendary. Some of these horses became very famous because of their famous owner.
Bear was a prize-winning Tennessee walking horse. Elvis bought this black horse fully trained, but in order to get him perform he had to be ridden along a fence line.Rising Sun was a big golden Palominohorse that Elvis bought in 1966. He had worked in horse shows and rodeos and it seemed that he lovedto be admired.Just a few of them were:Tennessee,Walking Horses named Memphis and Ebony'sDouble, and a mixed breed bay he named Mare Ingram after then Memphis mayor William Ingram. Once, Elvis brought daughter Lisa inside Graceland astride her Shetland pony for his grandmother Minnie Mae Presley to see. The pony "did what comes naturally" and Elvis had to clean it up. Minnie Mae was not amused.
Mare Ingram was one of the horses Elvis kept at the Circle G Ranch. Elvis bought the ranch in 1967 because Graceland didn’t provide enough space for all the horses he had by that time. He had the total of 18 horses.
As it happened with dogs, Elvis gave horses as gifts as well. He gave his father a horse named Colonel Midnight, and to Priscilla, he gave a horse named Domino. Even all his bodyguards got horses so they could accompany him in his daily rides.
There are still horses at Graceland, and the mansion has been open to the public since 1982.RisingSun was there and was visited by millions until he died in 1987
Elvis' girlfriend Linda Thompson tells the story of how she and Elvis would sometimes buy out a pet store and give the animals away and the fun they had doing it..
