    Stay Away Joe (1968)

    STAY AWAY JOE

    Theatrical-Release: 1968
    Studio: MGM
    Director: Peter Tewksbury
    Producer: Douglas Laurence
    Film Length: 98 mins
    Colour/B&W: Colour

    Cast:

    Joe Lightcloud - Elvis Presley
    Charlie Lightcloud - Burgess Meredith
    Glenda Callahan - Joan Blondell
    Annie Lightcloud - Katy Jurado
    Grandpa - Thomas Gomez
    Bronc Hogerty - L.Q. Jones
    Mamie Callahan - Quentin Dean

    Story:

Elvis plays the part of a Navajo Indian, returning from the rodeo business to his reservation in Arizona, with twenty heifers and a bull he promoted from his Congressman.

The plan was that Elvis and his Indian father, Burgess Meredith would start raising cattle and that the U.S. Government would help out the entire reservation.

Elvis however barbecues the bull and sells the cattle to buy his mother, Katy Jurado, the home improvements she needs.

Furthermore the movie has Elvis chasing Quentin Dean, the daughter of bar owner Joan Blondell, who chases Elvis all over the place to keep him from meeting Dean.

After a series of funny moments it appears the family will have to go to jail for selling the cattle, which was government property.

Naturally Elvis comes to the rescue and everything works out fine.

    Behind The Scenes:

Location filming was done in Cottonwood and Sedona, Arizona on October 18, 1967, until November.

Working titles were: "Bumblebee, Oh Bumblebee" and "Born Rich".

"Stay Away Joe" reached No.65 in Variety's top-grossing list for 1968.

I think it's one of Elvis' best.
The story isn't much but the movie does have it's moments and is really funny.
And yes, Elvis does look very good in this movie!

    Adios !

It gave Elvis a little more mature role, and that had to be a good thing instead of playing the singing racedriver or singing circus performer. The role was not a total Mr. Niceguy role.
