The big difference between Elvis and Brittany is that Elvis didn't usually make a public spectacle of himself. I think he had two bad concerts in his lifetime where his drug intake was noticeable? Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Hey Diane
Unfortunatley Elvis's drug intake was noticeable at dozens upon dozens of concerts. From 1973 until the end the problems were materializing at his live shows. It was up and down in 73 and 74.Overall 75 was decent with many good shows. The wheels came off in 76.With few exceptions it was a disaster. The summer tours were horrible. He didnt fare much better in 77.Some shows better than others.Elvis was truly having a hard trime functioning at many times.Often his speaking voice was so slurred you couldnt even understand him.

And that just adds to the downfall of her imo...overexposure.

Exactly...Elvis had his share of bad shows, and yes many times as Jak said it was VERY obvious that he was HIGHLY medicated.

More than two shows i'm affraid. Here's a few from the top of my head.

    June 6th 1976 Atlanta
August 28th 1976 the Infamous show from Houston
    September 27th-28th College Park
    June 19th 1977 Omaha
October 5th 1974 Afternoon show In Indianapolis

These were all very below Elvis' standards...

I'm sad to hear that. I thought he'd only had a bad spell for a while in '74 and picked himself up in '75. I hadn't realized his last four years were that bad but thanks for letting me know.

You can add many more to the list. The infamous Baltimore show where he had to leave and then comeback is another. The last Vegas season started out very rough. It's not just a show here or there. The drug use adversley affected his performance level from 73 on.It's not a short list. The drugs robbed him of the ability he was accustomed to just a short time prior.

And yet theres the story for on June 28, 1973 Elvis almost overdosed in St. Louis Mo. He appeared that night at Kiel Auditorium (I had wanted to go but could not get tickets) but Elvis researcher and author Joe Tunzi was at that performance and he said Elvis was up and it was the best performance vocally of any he ever saw Elvis give. Tunzi saw Elvis many times. So Elvis must have had some of the most amazing recuperative powers of anyone who ever performed if the story is completely true. Tunzi says there is a soundboard of the 6-28-73 St. Louis show and I sure wish they would release it-just to see what kind of shape he was in-since it is reported he almost overdosed.

Personally I just know that nothing in 73 could be considerd his best effort vocally or otherwise.Just no way.Tunzii has been put to task for that statement many times.

The crazy thing is that those tour shows from the spring and summer months of 1973 were outstanding. Atlanta, Nashville, etc...I looked and theres not even an audience recording out there of the St. louis concert..another one I hope comes up some day. I will say I find many shows from this time period among Elvis' best vocally. jmo.

It's funny 1973-74 had its ups and downs but for the most part 1975 was pretty **** good all the way through. Even the last Vegas engagement during the month of December of that year showed us Elvis giving great performances!! But when '76 rolled round, the wheels were coming off faster than ever.

Jak is correct. It is the August 28, 1976 show in Houston, TX where he apparently and literally didn't wake up until halfway through the show. After this, they no longer booked him to play matinee (afternoon) shows.

As much as I love the "Aloha" broadcast, it does have it's weak points.

What do you see as a weak point in Aloha T?

I've read this in several places about the overdose in St. Louis. But he was still able to perform. I wonder if the overdose didn't come after the show b/c after St. Louis, he went to Atlanta, Georgia, but with a day or 2 between the shows. That particular summer of 73 was apparently a rough one for Elvis because of the noticible increase in drugs.

Ehh....basically his vocals (on some songs) are just too 'nasally" sounding ("Something", for example). I love his versions of "Trilogy" and "What Now, My Love" from Aloha, though. The main 'weak point' for me is that he was just too 'stiff' during the show and didn't move around enough.....of course, there are varying opinons on why this was...mainly due to wanting to do the best show and/or nervousness.

I know that he was reportedly not on drugs for the shows in Hawaii (and I believe that he did clean himself up for those shows), he just didn't have the energy that he had in his prior concerts - almost a sedated performance (for lack of a better phrase) - but a drug induced sedation, just lacking the energy normally seen in his performances.

That's what I'm wondering...I know Elvis came in too early on the song It's Over...other wise I find the Special to be a singing clinic!!!

I'm going to watch it and the rehearsal concert tonight!!
