Us New Yorker's can be arrogant and foolish at times. But the Afternoon in the Garden crowd just roars when Elvis steps on stage, you get a rush when you hear it like you were sitting in the garden watching him. I love that cd.
Tonight I decided to listen to the opening concert from June 9th 1972 on the cdr Elvis Opens At The Garden. The sound isn't the best but its definitley good enough to where you can enjoy elvis' first concert at the madison square garden. I remember reading in Jerry Hopkin's book elvis the final years how the audience booed Jackie Kahane off stage and elvis was told about it before he went on stage and he said f*** it then if they can't show any more respect than that i'm not singing for them..something along those lines. So finally they calmed Elvis down and he went on to do the show. something I noticed during the song proud mary it seems to me atleast elvis puts alot of emphasis on the word MEMPHIS yells it much louder than he was singing the other lyrics. just got me to thinking if he was doing that just to get at the audience or something. I don't know just read someone else thinking the same thing on another forum and it made me want to dig this cdr out and play it and I think the same thing. None the less the performance was outstanding. such a shame rca didn't record opening night at the garden.

"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley
I agree. My only problem is that it seems to be a lot shorter than the other 3 shows, as if E was maybe punishing the audience or something. I know when he did his '73 shows in Atlanta, though on those shows he was in a great, joking mood, he would make comments like "..People here in Atlanta wish they could die and go to Memphis.." or something along those lines. I think to Elvis, Memphis was filled with the absolute most kind people he'd ever met so if he went to a city that wasn't like that, he'd chastise them for not being more like Memphis. Just my opinion though. The truth is there somewhere.....
I still find the Elvis' very best show of June '72 (in my opinion, the best show of '72) is Fort Wayne, IN. It strikes me odd that in a building holding app. 7,500 fans and the air conditioning not working, he still seemed to give it 110% that night.......

After reading about Proud Mary, I had to give it a listen on YouTube!

Such ENERGY! and I do believe he does emphasize Memphis. I have Afternoon in the Garden, I forget who told me it was the better concert performance. I guess I'll have to see about "Opens at the Gardens", too.
Just pretend, I'm holding you, and whispering things soft and low.
And think of me, how it's gonna be and just pretend I didn't go
