    Kid Galahad (1962)

    KID GALAHAD

    Theatrical-Release: 1962
    Studio: United Artists
    Director: Phil Karlson
    Producer: David Weisbart
    Film Length: 95 mins
    Colour/B&W: Colour

    Cast:

    Walter Gulick - Elvis Presley
    Willy Grogan - Gig Young
    Dolly Fletcher - Lola Albright
    Rose Grogan - Joan Blackman
    Lew Nyack - Charles Bronson
    Joie Shakes - Michael Dante
    Otto Danzig - David Lewis

    Story:

After his discharge from the army Elvis arrives at the boxing trainingcamp owned by Gig Young.
Elvis isn't a very good boxer, but proves he can take a lot of punches and on top of that has a terrific right hand, with which he knocks out Michael Dante, a pro-boxer.

Young sees money in Elvis and he needs lots of it to pay off his gambling debts to David Lewis, a gangster.

Joan Blackman plays Young's sister. She arrives to stay at the camp and falls in love with Elvis.

After a lot of fights - all won by Elvis - he asks Joan to marry him as soon as he can leave the ring. He wants to go into the garage business together with the local garage owner.
Gig Young is strongly against their romance.

After a fight in which Lewis overmatches Elvis with one of his own fighters, a guy that is far out of Elvis' league, Lola Albright - Young's girlfriend - get's really mad and leaves Young.

Lewis offers money to Bronson, when Bronson won't be in Elvis' corner the next fight. Lewis wants one of his men there to take care of Elvis' wounds, because he want to make sure the wounds stay open.
Bronson refuses and the gangster break his fingers.
At that point Young and Elvis arrive and together they fight the criminals.

During the final fight Elvis knocks his opponent out and of course there's a happy end: Elvis will marry Joan and Young and Albright will marry too.

    Behind The Scenes:

Filming started in November 1961 and ended on December 22.

"Kid Galahad" was shot in Idylwild, California. Interiors were filmed at the MGM Studios in Culver City.

Elvis' coach was Mushy Callahan, a former junior welterweight boxing champion.

Delays in production, because of bad weather on location, forced Elvis to stay in Bel Air for Christmas. It was the last time he would ever be away from Graceland during the Christmas time.

"Kid Galahad" reached No.9 on Variety's top grossing chart.

Loved this one, wish they'd explained why Lew (Bronson) had a bum foot, they made such a big deal about pointing out that he had bad foot/ankle. My favorite scene is where Walter walks into the lodge & is floored by little sister, Rose - so much so he can't speak!

yes, mushy callahan did a good job training him....i found this photo recently...

mushy is a legend in boxing...he lost his title to the great jack 'kid' berg.

i have a question about this film.....i have heard a lot about how elvis and bronson didnt like each other, or bronson didnt like elvis, and they never spoke to each other on set, at all, apart from scenes together.....is that true and can anyone expand on that ?

Another really good movie by Elvis. He acts really well in this one and a stroy line which is really solid. Like Follow That Dream, the songs in this movie are quite good. Not too many, just enough.
