I never knew that..that totally sucks cause it was promoted and proclaimed as the show to be broadcast around the "world".
Aloha from Hawaii was not show in the UK until October 1978. EIC was shown the following week..why is that ? I thought the special was a world wide satellite broadcast!!

I think the Hawaiian concert really was the first satellite concert broadcast, but not literally "worldwide". It was never shown on TV here, in Hungary as I know well.

Aloha was beamed live to South-East Asia, Japan and Australia (Sydney and Melbourne only) at 12.30am Honolulu time on January 14th, 1973.
(I should know ... I saw it then!)
Twenty-four hours later (or thereabouts), it was beamed (on delay, obviously) to 28 countries in Europe.
And the idea that over 1 billion people were watching is just that. An idea. The only time this figure was ever mentioned was during one or both of the press conferences, where it was mentioned as "a potential audience of over 1 billion". Yes, potential only if every single one of those people had a TV and had it switched on to Elvis. As has been discussed before, there is absolutely no proof that the billion-plus viewing figures for Aloha (perpetuated by EPE and a myriad of inaccurate sources) are true. In fact, it would have been impossible.
(Oh, and I know I'm being pedantic here, but the show was a telecast, not a broadcast. TV is telecast; it's radio that is broadcast).![]()

Getlo - cute'n'cuddly
There was no way to broadcast to all the world without some getting the broadcast very very late, or some getting it very very early. I for one would have got up very early or stayed up late for the live show regardless. NBC wanted to get it out at the best viewing times in all parts of the world. The "billion viewers total" is certainly debateable both ways as there is no way to truely say how many people saw it everywhere. I know in my home we had one TV, but when we watched it there were 5 in my family and I had 2 friends over watching that night.
I'm not 100% convinced that the 1 billion viewing figure is correct for 1973, however I do believe that figure to be true today!
I have read that there was a big fee to be paid by the countries that would be viewing it and the UK television stations were unwilling to meet the figures required?
I suppose in some countries Elvis just didn't have the same allure that he had back in th 1950's..... How were they to know that this would be Elvis' defining moment of the 70's![]()
Thanks for that information Getlo and setting the record straight. by now it has definitley been seen by over 1 billion people world wide i'm sure.I still find it to be one of the BEST concerts he done, and definintley imo the most professional show!

I like this show, I'm not sure it is one of his best due to the fact it feels a little restricted.. Elvis knew that there were many countries going to see this show, including countries like Japan that were a little more reserved in their outlook.
For me the rehearsal feels more like a Elvis concert as he seems more relaxed and kicked back more.![]()
I agree Matt, the think he wantd the special to be straight forward no kidding around and wanted it to be serious and it was..it is different than other concerts as there was not much at all kididng around etc.but i like that to Aloha was a straight up singing clinic!!!!

I would think the UK would have not been one of those countries since he had such a huge fan base there for most of his career. I recall one of the huge offers to the Col. was from an Englishman who wanted one concert from Elvis in England. Maybe the people in charge of the TV in England were just not up on how popular he was in the UK?
Yes, you're right. It is really unbelievable to me as well that he changed so much within a short time. And it's so sad that the group who was with him and worked with him all the time (I think about Joe Esposito, Charlie Hodge, James Burton, Ronnie Tutt and the others) had to watch it and they couldn't do anything against it. I think he still looked great in '73, I love the Hawaiian Concert very much, especially the rehearsal concert. I also think he was more relaxed there. But both concerts were really fantastic and beautiful!!

PRECISELY J.J.!!!
That has always been my feeling as well....that the rehearsal show is much more loose and Elvis is clearly more relaxed, thus making it a much more enjoyable show and gives a much closer feeling to what an actual Elvis show was like!
Not that the actual ALOHA show as bad or anything like that....it was an AWESOME show. But you can clearly see Elvis is nervous....and I think that nervousness, for whatever reason (he didn't want to make a mistake that would be seen by millions of people, he was nervous peforming for so many fans, or whatever the reason) definitely limited his performance. Vocally, he was BEYOND WORDS!!! (Just listen to the performance of AMERICAN TRILOGY....nothing further needs to be said about his vocal performance!)
But his physical movements were definitely lacking that night...
TCB!

We will miss you dearest friend
That was the first thing I noticed when I first seen this years ago because before the aloha concert the only Elvis concert i had seen was TTWII Special Edition..and I was wondering why isn't he moving around. But then I learned to appreciate it vocally and my what a performance..listen to the beautiful rendidtion of It's Over or What Now My Love..beautiful strong ballads!!![]()

Strange that the UK had to wait that long,as Elvis is most popular in the UK then anywhere else, wich i also find strange,as i thought the sober Brits prefer beatles and more of that sort then the King..i'm happy tho they love him so much ofcourse,,and it is also the only place where they officially released the 18 no.1 hits single box..i have it tho..and yeh i know he had 30 no.1 hits..18 in the UK tho.
I my country The netherlands,Elvis was never popular here...it's a shame really
