Thread: Where do you fall?

  1. #1

    Cool Where do you fall?

the Elvis fan base is very large and eclectic.

i was just wondering how old everyone was, and when did you get into Elvis.

i'm 35 years old. i was 4 when he died. the day he died was the first memory i have of him. i remember seeing the reaction of my family and that sparked the question "who is Elvis".

a day or two later, my mom and i went to a department store called "BEST" and she bought every Elvis record they had. the total was over $300. we even had duplicates. she literally grabbed every record, threw 'em in the cart and to the register we went.

immediately i had my own treasure and i didn't even know it yet. i remember immediately gravitating towards the picture disc for "A Legendary Performer Vol. 3" and "Hound Dog" sinking it's teeth into me.

so, 31 years later, here i am.

    TCB, baby!

I am 18 and my dad got me hooked. He is a huge Elvis fan and I have been dancing and listening to Elvis basically since I was born.
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley

My first memory of Elvis was in 1973 when i was 7 years old. My parents had sat down to watch the Aloha special. I was on the floor playing with my barbie dolls. The music started and I saw this beautiful being singing and I was hooked . I sat for 2 hours in a trance. I knew at that moment fairytales were real because I had seen a real Prince. Suddenly Barbie and Ken became Barbie and Elvis.Whatever it was that night this man took a hold of a little girl`s heart and never let it go. He has been with me all my life. He has helped me through some real rough times. I will share with you a very special Elvis story that happened to me many years ago but i have to be in the right frame of mind to share it. Kim

I am 26 and I got into Elvis around 5 or 6 years of age. Thanks to my mom constantly watching AMC and TCM all the time when I was younger. If he could catch a 5/6 year old's attention and hold it, he was something special.

I loved this post Kim..you have a wonderful way of expressing yourself. I can tell you that I know exactly how you felt that night. The very same thing happened to me in 1968. I was 9 years old when the 68 Special was shown for the first time, yet I remember that night as well as if it were last night. He captured something in my heart and in my soul almost instantly, and I knew he would always be a part of my life. Here we are 40 years later, and I have never lost that hold he has on me. It's a feeling that I know I will take to my grave...he is a never-ending presence in my heart. He touched a part of me that no one ever will. I thank God every day that he was here in the flesh during my lifetime.

Kim...Rosie...I too can relate! I heard Elvis long before I saw Elvis, because I was raised on his music. I remember that for a long time in my VERY young life we didn't have a television, but we had records! My parents were very into music...more so than anything else. The 68 Special was the FIRST time I ever saw the man, and I was entranced by him! It was not just one thing about him...it was everything about him! There was no way to explain it. HE was ELVIS! When the other kids at school were into the "fad" types of music and the newest bands, I would listen to them, but I never layed Elvis aside. They just didn't have "IT"!

Trisha Yearwood had a song titled: "The Song Remembers When". To me, that song says alot about the connection between my life and Elvis. It seems that every single song that the man has ever sang will jolt my memory and send me back to a specific time and place that I normally would maybe have forgotten. Strange...I know, but true. I guess I devoted so much time to him that he became almost woven into the fabric of my life. A real part of me. From the times when I was melancholy, to the times when I was on top of the world, and all situations in between...there is a song that remembers it.

Perhaps my son has summed it up best... He once said, "Mom, Elvis will never really be dead to you, because you keep him alive in your heart." And I do. So for as long as I live, in my heart, so too lives Elvis.

Daddy, I miss you more every day. You will always be my hero..

I never heard Elvis'music before TTWII ! I went to see the film because I heard "Patch it up". I was so (thanks to the smileys because it's not very easy for me to write my feelings in english ) when I saw him on the screen, that I went to the cinema 7 times in 7 days !

And, since this film, he is a big part of my life. He's "always there to lend a hand" in bad moments. And his music shares also the good moments of my life.

You know what ? He's a very good friend of mine

My dad became an Elvisfan in his early teens (1956/1957) and bought EP's and LP's throughout the 50s and 60s. During the 70s he bought less albums, but still loved Elvis music.

So born in 1975, I grew up not listening much to Elvis (my dad did not play it very often) and didn't remember when Elvis passed away. But I remember browsing through an Elvis picturebook that my dad bought in oktober 1977. Years later that became somehow my bible. Not able to read, those pictures made it clear that Elvis was different than anything else I've seen: from the 50s to the 70s.

I loved playing my dad's Elvis albums and make my own compilations when I was about 8-9 years on. And that was the moment the ELvis virus got me and thank god, I was never cured from it.

When I was about 11-12 I was able to save money and tried to find out what albums I (or actually my dad) missed. That was the start of the never ending search for new music and digging into the past, trying to find out what made Elvis 'The King'. It's a wonderful treasure hunt.

    The first time I was aware of Elvis a friend of mine made us sit down and watch Love Me Tender. I just didn't see the big deal .{Of course, she was female and interested in things I just wasn't interested in about him.}

After that I was always aware of him, mostly his music. I grew up and had a busy life, getting an education, taking care of my own family. etc.
I never went to see him until 1977 . After that, I was hooked.
While collecting his music, I was never crazy about his movies.
After he passed away, I became more interested in "knowing" the man than anything else . He's a fascinating study. Truly, a person one never forgets !
"I have learned never to ridicule any man's opinion, however strange it may seem."

I'm proud to say i've been a fan since 1956, Elvis has always been a huge part of my life, through good times and sad times.
He has owned a bit of my heart which i never want back,it's true what you say, Elvis will never fade away, as long as there is an Elvis Presley fan alive on GOD'S earth he will always be around.

    Wonderful posts everyone

I'm 15 now and I've been a fan only for 2 years and since then, I can't think of a day spend without at least a little Elvis in it. He's become a huge part of my life and the amazing thing is that through him and thanks to him, I've made a few wonderful friends I first saw Elvis performing the Aloha From Hawaii show on TV. Before that I knew who Elvis was, but never really paid attention to him and his music. When I heard that wonderful voice and saw that beautiful face I knew I was hooked...and once you are hooked on Elvis, you are hooked on forever

This is a great thread. We have such a great bond between us . Everything everyone writes can be my own feelings toward Elvis. This is great therapy! After all these years I have had so many things I wanted to say about my connection to Elvis and here I am letting it all out. I just love it! Lea, I can`t believe what you said about the song 'The Song Remembers When" I bought that cd because of the connection it gave me to Elvis. Wow! Great minds think alike. I will sum up Elvis this way " Face of a Greek god, voice of an angel, heart of gold." I think I am off topic , sorry! Keep you stories coming...

I have been an Elvis fan since about 1967, a friend had one of those reel tape players and we was in his house one day and was bored to death, as teenagers often are!, when he put on this tape and was playing different songs when on came " return to sender" so I got him to play it about 12 times in a row. Elvis has been a big part of my life ever since then, he was on the radio ( radio Luxemburg, Tony Prince) the first time I kissed my girlfriend ( the song was " Just can't help believing") who is now my wife of 32 years. I can also listen to songs of his and it takes me back to different times in my life some good, some not so good. When he died there was such a wrench as my heart was torn from my body, that to this day I can not watch or listen to Elvis without that sadness comes to the top.Even now after all these years there is still that empty space in my body that will never be filled. I am so jealous of all the new Elvis fans who will get the excitement of listening to an Elvis song for the first time, that feeling you get, there is nothing like it in the world, sadly as I have said I will probably never get that feeling again, but I still get a lot of pleasure from listening and watching Elvis, LONG LIVE THE KING

I was 13 when I became an Elvis fan. At Christmas 1969 I had the single Suspicious Minds and the album Elvis sings Flaming Star. Of course the curiosity got my attention when I read the back of this album. Elvis had 4 Golden Records albums and 2 Religious albums. Because of this history I started to find out more about Elvis Presley. I am the only Elvis fan in my family. I have been an Elvis fan over 38 years. Never stopped loving Elvis music or watching his films.

I was 11 years old and just getting into rock and roll music on the radio when I heard Elvis sing "That's All Right Mama" in 1956. His unique voice caught my attention right away...already hooked and didn't know it. A little later I saw a photo of him in a magazine and thought "wow, voice and fantastic looks too". I've never been the same since and wouldn't change it for the world.

There was a beautiful tribute to Elvis with that song, but it's been removed. Like you Lea, I associate EVERY thing in my life to a song. The first bar, and I'm right back at whatever year that was.
Like you, I heard Elvis before I saw him. When I was 4 years old I began to LOVE music and learned how to operate my parent's stereo. I learned to associate that black record label(RCA) with the 2 songs that I wanted to hear over and over. The 2 songs were Bossa Nova Baby and Good Luck Charm. I would play them over and over..and at times I would dance to Bossa Nova Baby. I STILL play Elvis over and over..I just don't always dance like I used to! Then..when I put that face with that voice I already loved, I was a goner!
