New information is being made available courtesy of Egil Krogh regarding the relationship between Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley. It was a most remarkable scene, if you can image it, when the King of Rock and Roll walked into the office of the straight-laced President. In fact, the images from that meeting are now legendary. To be a fly on the wall……

Of all the requests made each year to the National Archives for reproductions of photographs and documents, one item has been requested more than any other. That item, more requested than the Bill of Rights or even the Constitution of the United States, is the photograph of Elvis Presley and Richard M. Nixon shaking hands on the occasion of Presley’s visit to the White House.

And now new information that keeps the story growing more interesting.

Friendship apparently meant more to Elvis Presley than politics. Egil “Bud” Krogh, the presidential aide who was convicted of running Richard Nixon’s “plumber” unit and who also guided Elvis around the White House on Dec. 21, 1970, reveals that the King and the former president kept in touch even after Watergate forced Nixon from office.

Krogh, who is updating his The Day Elvis Met Nixon with the new revelation, says Elvis phoned Nixon in 1974 when the ex-prez was suffering from life-threatening phlebitis. “Something obviously happened when they met,” says Krogh, whose latest book, Integrity, is a primer on how to ethically serve a president. “They liked each other very much.” And Nixon returned the favor when Elvis fell ill. “Nixon was a defender of Elvis,” Krogh tells us.

Actually, this isn't 'new' news. There's an article in 'The Elvis Album' from 1992 that mentions Elvis receiving a phone call from former U.S. President Nixon when he (Elvis) was in the hospital in 1975.

Yes, it's very old news. They exchanged a couple of letters from 1970 on (these are - or were? - on display at the Richard Nixon Library).

The only phonecall Nixon made to Elvis, though, was to Baptist Memorial Hospital on August 30th, 1975, to wish him a speedy recovery during one of his stays there.

Frank Sinatra also called that day.

Exactly. That's ^^^ the phone call I was referring to. To consider Elvis and Nixon regular 'phone pals'? Not likely because (by all accounts) Elvis hated talking on the telephone and even when he did talk on the phone it was always very brief.


Once again, I think this is a situation of someone trying to make Elvis's friendship with another person more important than it really was.

I don't disagree about Esposito. But, then anyone that he happened to say hi to does the same , IMO.
Even having a picture taken with the man. I'm not sure why everyone "wants a piece of Elvis." Does that make them better or more important? Not in my book.

Let me add: The same applies to any Elvis fan that thinks "they know it all." Not one of us can truthfully say," Elvis didn't like to talk on the phone" IMO. All we have are books that anyone can read. There are plenty of people that have talked to Elvis by phone. That seemed to be his favorite way of communicating. ; certainly not by letters--or there would be more of those around.

Thanks, Jen. Even though some are saying it is "old news"....almost everything concerning Elvis is old news at this point. Not all fans know about the phone calls after the White House meetup. So IMO it is good to bring up information that new fans to the fold, or even old Elvis fans that are not constantly in the loop... may be unaware of.

If I recall correctly from back then-On the 1975 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, Frank mentioned he had called Elvis in the hospital and announced Elvis was donating $5000.00 to the Telethon.
