    Original Aloha Album Cover

What date and where is the pic on the original Aloha album from? I could never understand why RCA didnt use a pic from Aloha.
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley

The picture on the Aloha Album cover is from April 6th, 1972 Detroit. It was highly unusual to use recent pictures on the album covers, at least during the seventies. Only a few albums had a up to date pictures. Below you will find a collection of albums and pictures:

On Stage (1970) Picture from Feb. 1970 (Las Vegas)
Elvis: That's The Way It Is (1970) Picture from August 11, 1970 (Las Vegas)
    Elvis-Country (1971) Picture from 1938
Love Letters from Elvis (1971) Picture from November 14th, 1970 (Los Angeles, California)
Elvis Now (1972) Picture from August 1971 (Las Vegas)
He Touched Me (1972) Picture from August 1971 (Las Vegas)
As Recorded At Madison Square Garden (1972) Picture from April 16th, 1972 (Jacksonville, Florida)
Separate Ways (1973) Picture from Nov. 5th, 1971 (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Aloha From Hawaii (1973) Picture from April 6th, 1972 (Detroit, Michigan)
Elvis - Fool (1973) Picture from January 14th, 1973 (Aloha Show)
Raised On Rock (1973) Picture from January 1973 (Las Vegas)
Good Times (1974) Picture from June 18th, 1972 (Fort Worth, Texas)
Promised Land (1974) Picture from May 11th, 1974 (Los Angeles, California)
Today (1975) Picture from June 22nd, 1973 (Long Island, New York)
From EP Boulevard (1976) Picture from June 10th, 1975 (Memphis, Tennessee)
Moody Blue (1977) Picture from November 18th, 1972 (Honolulu, Hawaii)
In Concert (1977) Picture from June 1st, 1975 (Huntsville, Alabama)

The photo used on the "Fool" album is in fact from the January 14th,1973 concert. The photo was taken just as Elvis was finishing "I Cant Stop Loving You".

    I hope this helps!

I can't believe they used that photo for the Aloha Cover. The Colonel must have had all the LP covers pre-printed for fast release. Such a classic event should've had a photo of Elvis in Action at the Show!. Not to mention that the Aloha suit was one of the best Jumpsuits he had ever worn.

Right, and as I recall that was especially true of the MSG and Aloha albums. One or the other had some kind of amazing turnaround in the number of days between the concert and when the LPs hit the store shelves. (I think it was MSG.)

This was less of an issue for studio albums because there was not that matter of waiting for the material.

You know, IMO not only were the album covers for the most part uninspired, they usually featured not such great photos, the two named above being among them. In several cases there are photos available from the same show, same photographer which would have made much better choices -- sometimes taken just seconds apart. So you know they were under consideration but passed over for whatever reason.

And thanks for the list, Leroy.

I think it was due to the fact that they wanted the album out as quick as possible and didn`t have time to wait for the pics from the show it self, so as you suggest, I think they had the covers pre-printed, ready for a quick release.

I have always thought that the Aloha cover was very cool especially with the die-cut showing the photo. A little bit of creativity from RCA which was rare. Also since I was the the April 6th show at detroit I guess I'm biased.

Did Apollo 13 take this cover photo?
Not the Elvis part, I know.

The UK was one of the first to get Aloha From Hawaii album in the shops.
Not much of a cover to look at. They could have waited for available photo's from the show to use for the cover.

Back in the fifties I think there were better made 45 rpm covers than covers from the sixties and seventies. Anyway speaking of album covers I have never seen any really awesome covers from any artist, not just Elvis'. I guess the producers weren't into album cover designing.

I mean they could have picked a better pic than that at least something from MSG or something like that. That pic is not the greatest one, IMO dont flame me for this guys that pic does not make Elvis look good.

The photos that were used for the 70's album covers were probably chosen because The Colonel had cut some kind of shady side deal to use those EXACT photos!!

Just my own evil little conspiracy theory though...
