I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

    Aloha everyone!

I am wondering, in the Aloha show, did Elvis missed one verse and a instrumental from this song ?

"I've never seen a nigth so long as time goes crawling by, the moon just went behind the cloud to hide his face and cry" And the intrumental

Is this from this song, or am i wrong ?

    Toffe

That is the other verse to that song. My guess is that (being that they only had the satellite for one hour) Elvis just omitted that particular verse.

I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry

    Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
    When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
    When leaves begin to die
That means he's lost his will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
    Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Another thing to consider is that when Elvis or Jerry Lee Lewis dug into the old catalogues they might only remember one or two verses at that particular time. When they both recorded When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again, they both omitted verses. They both remembered thousands of songs, but no-one know how much of which songs came to them. (I'm doing good if I can remember names of songs that I used to do on stage, let alone lyrics)
If you're an Elvis Fan no explanation is necessary.
If you're not, no explanation is possible :

The same could be said for Johnny B. Goode -- I'm not aware of Elvis ever singing the "gunny sack" verse -- and many other songs were shortened considerably for the Aloha concert and others.

I know that's not really the point of your post though, toffe. That missing verse is a great lyric...the whole song is one of a number of lyrical masterpieces from Hank Williams.

The informal recording of the song at the Thompson family home in November 1973 features Elvis singing that verse, but with altered lyrics:

Did you ever see a night so black
    When clouds go drifting by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hang his head and cry

    ...if memory serves.

I`ve always loved this song....the lyrics are just plain haunting. It`s a pity he didn`t sing the complete song on the Aloha show. I`ve yet to hear the version from the Thompson home.

I'd suggest not. It's probably another case of Elvis simply omitting a verse which maybe he never knew (at the time) or just couldn't be bothered with.

He did that a lot with songs; eg Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues (the verse about the pills) and I'll Never Fall In Love Again (where he sings the words completely wrong, mixes up verses etc).

Maybe Elvis liked to make his different. Because that's the sort of person he was.
