    Elvis myths

    Okay, here's something that I've thought a lot about over the years. What are some of the things you've read or heard about Elvis that were later proven to be myths?

    I've made a list below.

    Now remember ... if you don't like this thread, don't post on it.

    1. Elvis once shot his mother;
    2. Elvis never, ever took drugs (and he needed all of what he took!);
    3. Elvis' body weight was all water-retention;
    4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;
    5. Elvis stayed completely faithful during his marriage, while Cilla was the one to sleep around;
    6. Elvis once said that all black people were good for was to shine his shoes;

    Any others?

    That he choreographed the title dance scene in Jailhouse Rock (it was based on his stage moves, but JR had a choreographer).

    That he had bone cancer.

    That he stole Hound Dog from its writer, Big Mama Thornton (this one was extremely popular for a few years).

    And this seems to be a good thread to mention this one: that he had an affair with June Carter before she married Johnny Cash. Carter Cash's son mentions this in his book on his mother (which is fascinating reading for anyone who thinks there was a shred of truth in the movie Walk the Line, by the way). And I've seen an interview with June Carter in which she claimed that Elvis had a massive crush on her.

    This one was new to me - I thought Anita Carter was the one that interested Elvis. Does anyone know if there's any truth in it?

    Well, it wasn't an affair in the sense that anyone was cheating on anyone else; but June and Elvis had a bit of a thing going, before Johnny was on the scene.

    In the 70s, Johnny burned Elvis' love letters to her in a fit of jealousy.

    I knew about burning the letters. Although that one didn't make it into Johnny's autobiography, LOL.

    I guess I don't see the timing with Elvis and June. I thought she would be pregnant with her daughters a lot of the time when she first knew him.

    good thread Getlo. I didn't hear Elvis had a thing for June, I heard it was her sister - and she wouldn't give him the time of day.

    It wasn't all water-retention, but you can see the puffiness in his hands and face at times which seemed to disappear a few concerts later-that is a sign of some water-retention.

    To answer Getlo's post of myths:

    l. He never shot his mother

    2. He took more drugs than was prescribed and was addicted

    3. He gained weight and at times had water retention on top of it

    4. Don't know what book he was reading when he died

    5. I think he tried to be faithful the first part of his marriage but don't think it lasted

    6. He had no prejudice against blacks and doubt very much if he said what was stated

    My question:

    Did he really like the Colonel or was he intimidated by him?

    I remember that myth as Elvis & Marilyn had a quickie at his hotel room!

    Also, Elvis was gay.

    [Never heard about June C. and Elvis, Johnny was jealous of Elvis? THat's kinda romantic that he burned her old love letters. Why did she keep them? boy that would've made a great c&w song!]

    1. Elvis once shot his mother;
    Nope, I don't believe he shot his mother.{never heard that one}

    2. Elvis never, ever took drugs (and he needed all of what he took!);
    Think Elvis and friends tried some a time or two.
    He needed some of what he took.Doctor prescribed more ,possibly. ?

    3. Elvis' body weight was all water-retention;
    Much of his weight/puffiness was water retention.

    4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;
    Two different books was said that he was reading. One of them was about Jesus. Don't really care .

    5. Elvis stayed completely faithful during his marriage, while Cilla was the one to sleep around;
    According to Cilla; he was .Good enough for me.

    6. Elvis once said that all black people were good for was to shine his shoes;
    That's already been proven wrong.

    Already looked at most of this. It's enough for me.

    "Cilla" didn't say Elvis was faithful She said his cheating was part of the territory.
