Thread: Madonna aims to take on Elvis.

Madonna aims to take on Elvis.

MADONNA has hatched a plan to beat ELVIS PRESLEY’S record of the most UK No1 hits.

The Material Girl aims to re-release all her huge singles as downloads this year to celebrate her 50th birthday.

That will annoy her soon to be ex-label Warner, who want to make the most of her back catalogue before she leaves them. Next year is going to be a Madgefest, with a massive gig in New York to mark the milestone.

She’s entering the wrinkly rocker stage of her career – at least she would be if not for her beautician – and you have to salute her.

But I’d salute her even more if she bowed out at the top.

    Note:

Madonna has twelve No.1 singles in the UK so far.

Cliff Richard and Westlife have 14 each, The Beatles have 17 and Elvis 21.

To me in order for someone to take on Elvis would have to have a similar style which Madonna hasn't. Otherwise, it's two different types of music altogether so I never understand these so called "records". I guess they must mean how many records sold etc. but then, wouldn't it be fairer if it was based on the same amount of years the artist did this. I mean, Elvis is gone and can't come and take back first place.

Contrary to Elvis, Madonna has run her carreer quite professionally. She picked her images and laid out a longterm strategy. Her 'comeback' with the Ray Of Light album was fantastic done.

But Elvis was the first megastar of the modern (tv) age who turned 'old'. By now artists like Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Clapton, Bon Jovi, etc. know how to adjust their carreer to their age. Elvis' death (and megasales after his death) also learned recordcompanies a lot.

Elvis was the first, the one and only icon of popular music.... even if Madonna would break the record of most number ones in the UK (or any other record that Elvis hold), it doesn't change a thing to Elvis' status.

Sorry, but Elvis wasn't the first "icon of popular music" at all.

Caruso, Sinatra and others preceded him.

    The one?

We might think so, but fans of other entertainers would disagree as it's so subjective.

    The only?

Of course not. Caruso, Sinatra, Count Basie, Dylan and, yes, even Madonna (and dozens of others) are music "icons".

Oh yeah, so how manyof them have their home opened to the public as the ultimate destination on pop culture? How many have their own Reeese cup candy bar? How many have had a #1 worldwide hit 30 years after their death? Better still when was the last #1 hit for Madonna?

Elvis is the only orignal American Idol.

No idea. I fail to see what relevence Graceland's opening is to Elvis' status as a music "icon".

Her last US Hot 100 hit (Music) was seven years ago. When was the last time Elvis had a No.1 hit prior to his death? It was a nine-year break if memory serves.

    That's just being silly.

Madonna should strive to break records with her releases, as should anybody else when putting out a product. That being said, it's undeniable that Elvis is by far, the biggest star the world has ever known, and the measuring stick for fame and countless of other records and achievements. That fact isn't even debatable!

That's true! But with him, his fandom goes deeper then just his music, it's like he's everywhere, despite the fact that he passed away.

Madonna's last hit was 7 years ago. Exactly my point. EP's had 1 remix and 3 releases to go #1 in the past 5 year span. EP was still selling records to a pop audience and charting in the Top 40 up to his death. What was your point? And who said I wasn't coming here anymore? I was banned for speaking my mind and setting a member straight who was obviously blind and couldn't see the evidence that i provided for them. There's a difference.

Exactly! EP is the only entertainer today that is marketable in the theme world of attractions. Just look at Graceland. The expansion plans should show anyone who doubts his longevity right there.

I'm just wondering why is everyone trying to compete with a dead man in record sales? It's not like he can jump up and record more music to keep up with them. I guess him being dead makes him an easy target to beat.

No one is banned or warned for speaking their mind. You were banned (as I was for a week a while back) for contravening the rules.

    Huge difference.

Elvis was the first Icon of Rock n Roll music.
Caruso, Rudy Vallee, Crosby, Sinatra all were Icons before Elvis in other forms of pop music.
I do think Elvis's stardom was pretty unprecedented in its scope when he broke. But it is subjective.

These artists think that if they break the records people would look at them as the new king, they fail to realize that there will only be one king- Elvis Aaron Presley.
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley
