oh, duh! I thought he said he was gay in the past, and was wondering why he was posting this, thanks for clearing this up for me. Once again, i don't judge others because they aren't "like me" or "normal" as society labels normal anyways......please return to your regular programming.![]()
Yeah, that was cool of Nick to have done that.
I never believed Nick latched onto Elvis to boost his own career. While he was never an A-lister (and he is mostly forgotten today) his career - although patchy - was well established by the time he met Elvis.
But I do believe Nick had a bit of a thing for him. It's never been revealed, but maybe that's why they drifted apart over the years? As accommodating as Elvis was, if Nick or some other male friend had said "Oh, by the way E, I'm gay (or bi)" it would have been adios to the friendship quick-smart.
As far as I know, the last time Elvis saw Nick was in 1964. Nick died five days after Lisa Marie was born. I would like to have been there when Elvis, Nick and Dennis Hopper were hanging out.
Useless trivia: Nick's birth name was Nicholas Aloysius Adamshock.![]()
Getlo - cute'n'cuddly
I agree with you Getlo, I think Elvis may have been a little edgy around Nick if he had known he was gay.I think that if he did find out and wanted to ease out of the friendship though that he would have done it in a decent way. It's never really been proven that James Dean was gay was it? I've always heard it was just a rumor.
Diane
I"ve read 7 bios on Dean by his "close friends" Some of them have said he was not and others say he was(or was bi-sexual) His high school friends all say he was not. He liked to try and experience everything he could and some of these people have based their opinions of his sexual orientation on that idea. I do not recall any first hand accounts of gay activity in any of the books I have read on him. But I read them years ago so I might be mistaken on that. But to the best of my memory there were no first hand accounts of gay sex.
From what I read it seems that most think Elvis wouldn't hang out with a gay person. I could understand in case somebody would touch Elvis "against his will", but just how homo-phobic was Elvis?
They say strange things about him.. macho, womanizer, racist, homo-phobe .. you name it. All these things don't seem to match up with the way I remember him.
Does anyone happen to know if Liberace's homosexuality was known around the time Elvis met him?
I guess that being gay doesn't fit iconic status, take James Dean for example. To a lot of fans it'd just be too repulsive - by any means my (sin-related) comments were meant to point out an attitude I have often encountered. It often helps to state just the opposite of what I feel and think.
Don't throw "off-topic" at me. It'd be just as wrong discussing James Dean here - my main question is how homo-phobic Elvis really was..?

all the goons I left behind,
memories still linger..
Not sure about Elvis, but there were a lot of homophobic guys around in the fifties and sixties, especially the fifties. Heck, Rock Hudson married a woman despite the fact that he was gay, in order to keep up appearances, since he was a sex-symbol. Sad, but true.
Ah well. All athletes are still straight nowadays.. I doubt gays and lesbians have been liberated - people still marry the opposite sex to keep up appearances, so what else is new?
Ruck Hudson's story is rather sad. If memory serves me correctly he was one of the first famous AIDS-victims.

Im not sure about Nick Adams being gay.Its funny how people start rumors. It is known though, that after Nick commiting suicide,Elvis took care of Nick's wife and kids and bills etc...for a while.
Here's a bit more from June's book:
It wasn't until doing research for this book that I learned Bitsy Mott was
the Colonel's brother-in-law, and that, like Nick Adams, he was a paid informer.
Nick was trying to make me jealous, and I couldn't understand why (Nick presented Elvis
a dress from Natalie Wood she sent him as a souvenir).
Later, when Elvis and I were alone, I asked him what Nick was trying to prove.
'I don't think Nick likes me,' I said. 'I wish you would've invited him to come visit
some other time, when I wasn't here.'
'I didn't invite him, June. He more or less invited himself. He's okay, baby. He's
just a lonesome little guy struggling to make it in Hollywood.
Keep being nice to him, June. He needs friends,' Elvis added,
showing his tender side. He always felt sorry for the underdog.
Nick was hard to figure out. Around Elvis, he was lighthearted
and funny. But when Elvis wasn't around, he was very serious with me,
constantly asking me personal questions - to the point of being
downright nosy. He knew things about me he could only have heard
from Elvis, and Elvis wasn't much of a talker when it came to his
personal life. I figured he must have been pumping Elvis for information
as well.
'Just how serious is it between you and Elvis, June? Do you two plan
to get married anytime soon, or what?' he asked.
'Nick I know you're supposed to be writing a book about James Dean.
Are you thinking of writing one about me too?' I answered, politely
evading his questions. 'If you want to know anything about Elvis and me,
I suggest you ask Elvis. If I didn't know better, I'd swear you were
a reporter,' I said, laughing him off. Nick would laugh too - but he
would keep on asking.
Nick even asked Pat if Elvis and I were sleeping together.
Nick was like Elvis's shadow. If we wanted to spend some time alone,
Elvis had to tell Nick to go find something to do, usually suggesting he
do a little PR at the front gate. Nick loved being the big shot and signing autographs - even
though they were all Elvis fans.
June tells nothing about Nick possibly being gay in her book. One time
Elvis asked him: 'Do you ever think of anything but girls?'
Nick made a movie in 1958 With Tommy Sands called "Sing, Boy Sing"
the tag line for the movie was:
THE STORY OF THE PREACHER'S SON WHO BECAME THE ROCK 'N' ROLL KING!
Nick played the traveling companion for Tommy Sands- Elvis inspired character. It was not a great movie but Adams did have some idea of what traveling with a "King of Rock 'N' Roll" was like.
I remember seeing that movie Sing Boy Sing with Tommy Sands and loved it. I don't remember Nick Adams being in it.
Diane
God is this getting wierd..No one needs to judge ,only god,JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED.
good post Miss Clawdy, I enjoyed reading it.
Boy he was nosy indeed and (I still stick to my opinion,) intrested in Elvis
It's hard NOT to imagine Elvis as perfect; how else could someone be THAT good looking, THAT talented, THAT generous & THAT charismatic
