They appear to be from the Carter Library. Check the top left hand side of the first scanned image.

    Yeah, I know.

I was asking cameron what book they may have been from because she said the Carter phonecall story was written about in many books besides Guralnick over the years, so ... you know.

I think what's sad is the fact that nothing is sacred anymore. Elvis called Mr.Carter, to try to help a friend out, Mr. Carter returns the call the next day, and because Elvis was out of it, ( at least according to Carter ) he felt the need to let the whole world know after Elvis had passed away. If that's me, I would have handled it with much more class then Carter did and respected Elvis' legacy. Better yet, why didn't Carter go to the papers the next day, and let them know what had transpired? Maybe if he did, that might have been the wakeup call that Elvis needed,no, he waited until after he died, nice.

    Hold on.

It's not Carters job to respect Elvis's legacy and Elvis should never have been like that when phoning the President and he shoulden't be looking for favours for Klein from someone that high up in Govt.

I think it shows how far removed from reality Elvis was at that stage.

Who else rings the President for help when their friend is facing a jail sentence!

    Aren't these two statements contradictory?

And yes, Elvis is dead ... Carter's story went unnoticed by the world anyway. The damage from all of the drug stories was already out there. It made no difference whatsoever.

And a US president going to the media and accusing the King of Rock and Roll of being out of it?

    I think not.

My point was, after Elvis had died, I wouldn't have mentioned the phone call concerning Elvis state of mind, either mention it right away, and perhaps help the man, or respect his memory once he passed away. I don't see anything contradictory.

    Oh yeah.

Well it'll be only a matter of time before we hear if it is featured in Nash's book about the The Colonel!!! I can't remember if it is or not, I would think probabaly not.

The book is a new purchase perhaps? It's getting quoted a lot here lately!!!

I agree with you. IF the story is true; it would show some class by not saying a thing. It served no purpose .

IMO Life happens and in a perfect world no one would ever screw up. Being the biggest rock and roll star does not stop life from happening and nor one from making mistakes.

    True.

But ringing the President about such a thing in my opinion shows affected Elvis was at that late stage in his life.

Wait a second, didn't the President return Elvis' phone call the next day? For all we know, he could have been completely coherent when he called Carter. No, it wasn't Carter's job to respect his legacy, but it was his job to respect him as a human being, which he was.

Oddly enough there has been little mentioned as to whether Carter himself was coherent at the time!

Judging by his performance as a president, that's a very good question!

From my understanding, Carter did call him back. I've no idea who started all that "other story" or why.

I agree; it was Carter's "job" to respect anyone that called him and their conversation.
I've never found any proof that "other phone call" ever took place.
    Except in story books.

All three calls are listed in Day By Day. Only one was where they actually spoke.

And to which "story books" are you referring here?
