    Long black Limousine

    I love this song
I was wondering, were the lyrics written about someone in particular? First I heard it was supposed to be about Lady Di, and then about James Dean...anyone has an answer?

I think it's about James Dean?!
    Look at the lyrics;
I love James Dean by the way

Theres a long line of mourners
    Driving down our little street
Their fancy cars are such a sight to see, oh yea
They're all rich friends who knew you in the scene
And now they've finally brought you
    Brought you home to me

When you left you know you told me
That some day you'd be returnin'
In a fancy car, all the town to see, oh yea,
Well now everyone is watching you
You finally had your dream, yea
You're ridin' in a long black limousine

You know the papers told of how you lost your life, oh yea
The party, the party and the fatal crash that night
Well the race along the highway, oh the curve you didn't see
When you're riding in that long black limousine

Through tear filled eyes I watch as you pass by oh yea
A chauffeur, a chauffeur at the wheel dressed up so fine
Well I never, I never, never, never
Oh my heart, all my dreams yea, they're with you
    In that long black limousine

Yea, yea, they're with you in that long black limousine

Yea, yea, they're with you in that long black limousine

The song is about a woman...not a man....he's singing about a lady (whoever she may be) that he dearly loved and lost in a car accident....

I always thought it was about a hometown girl who the singer loved that left to find riches and fame, died in a car crash and was brought back home to be buried.

    Thanks Tony

Indeed one of the most beautiful story-telling songs Elvis ever recorded. Would have been absolutley brilliant had he performed it live on stage imo!
"How do I get placed in situations like this? Ah hell, I guess it's all part of showbusiness "~ Elvis in his limo on his way to perform in Omaha, NE on June 19th 1977

This is why most song writers won't elaborate on who they are talking about in songs. Once you find out, it may not mean as much. As long as its left in the air it can apply to a lot of people . Great song, one of my favorite Elvis tunes ever.

You're welcome...and that's exactly what the song is about....

Here's some more information 'bout the song and the writers:

While Bobby George was stationed int eh Air Force in West Germany in 1954, he overheard a wife telling her husband that wished she was rich so she could ride in a long black limousine. The phrase stayed with him.

In 1962 he and Vern Stovall wronte "Long Black Limousine", which was first recorded by Gordon Terry (RCA47-7989). Later that year, Glen Cambell also recorded the song (Capitol 4856). Neither version charted. Jody Miller had the first and only chart recording of "Long Black Limousine" (capitol 2290) in 1968. Her version reached #73 on the country chart.

Elvis recorded "Long Black Limousine" at American Sound Studios on January 13, 1969. It was the first song he recorded there.

    LPs:

    "From Elvis In Memphis"
    "The Memphis Record"

(This information was taken from "Elvis: His Life From A To Z" which badly needs to be updated)

    Thanks, Tony.
I have a friend that loves this song too. I'll have to tell him the story behind the song.
