    Where were you?

The day Elvis died. Maybe this has been posted before but I am new and I'd love to here your stories if you don't mind. Thanks.

I'll go first. I was in my 1971 Nova getting the kids out of the car from the grocery store. It was on the radio. I don't even remember getting the kids out of the car. It was like someone punched me in my gut! As soon as I got in the house I called the family there. I was so worried about them. It was just so surreal. I was heartbroken for the family, for me, for the world. I hung up the phone (didn't want to break down talking to them) and started crying. Then got it togeather and called my husband.

I was at home in Ocala, FL but I was only 9 - so can't remember the exact details....I just know that I cried and cried and cried for days......in my room.....and just thinking about it gives me the creeps all over again because I thought at the time that it could not be real. He was my first 'real' death of someone I loved. My grandparents didn't die until I was much older....so he was my first real death that I had to deal with as a young child.

I was at home making a cup of tea..it was 10pm in the evening and the news was on tv.as i walked in to the living room the newscaster announced that they just got a report that Elvis was dead....I just dropped the tray with the tea and milk etc.it went everywhere..and i fell to my knees...i was numb...then the newscaster said...no we are now getting reports saying its not true....I felt so relieved..so i turned on the radio...and they were playing Elvis songs back to back....I knew in my heart that my worst thoughts were true..then the dj stepped in and confirmed the tragic news....I just sobbed uncontrollably..and sat up taping the whole show on the radio..I now have the 24 cassettes that i taped framed and sealed in a glass case...it was my brothers birthday too that day....I got to work the next day and they even sent me home on compassionate grounds..which was so very nice of them...A day I will NEVER forget...

    great thread Missy thankyou

    wow...this is so sad...

Yes, I remember very well. I was only 9. I was in my bedroom listening to That's The Way It Is, the album. The song was Just Pretend and then my best friend burst into the bedroom crying and telling me what had just happened...

I couldn't believe it...when into the living room and confirmed it on the news...

    ABSOLUTE SHOCK...

I was only 3 (almost 4) at the time, and I remember (yes I do) the teacher rushing into the classroom and told us that a famous singer just died and that we probably didn't know him: Elvis. Somewhere it ring a bell, thou I was only 3, but I didn't 'really' know who he was.

i had just turned seven the day before and was playing with my new doll. My mum had been cleaning the windows and ran upstairs crying. She told us Elvis was dead. My self and my brothers and sisters were crying. We went downstairs to find dad sitting in silence in the armchair. He looked stunned. We watched the tv allday long for anything about him. It felt like a member of our family had died. It was awful.

I'M EVIL - SO DONT U MESS AROUND WITH ME!

    I was 6

I will never forget that day. I remember being a little and my mom had the television on and a special report came on saying Elvis has died. My mother was hysterically crying... I will never forget the look on her face when she heard the news. My dad came home from work as well. It is amazing how time stopped the day Elvis died. You would never get that reaction today for another entertainer.

Such a moving thread...I wasn't born yet when Elvis died, and honestly I think it's not such a bad thing, I don't know if I could have faced it. Must have been so hard for all of you...

I was in my house with the TV on. I happened to walk through the den and heard that Elvis Presley was dead at age 42. I called my best friend (she was at work) to ask if she had heard the news. We were both Elvis fans. We couldn't decide if we were going to Memphis that weekend or wait since there would be so many people. We decided to wait until the next weekend. I was 30 years old. My friend and I went to Memphis on the 26th of August, 1977. We went to Forest Hill Cemetery to see the Mausoleum and also found Gladys Presley's grave. We also went to Graceland and roamed around the fence and got run off. I still have pictures our trip.

i understand what you mean popo..it was probably better not knowing him before he died.
the grief was and still is hard... even now my mind often wanders back to the times i seen him on tv,before 1977.and i am glad that i had those experiences, and memories.there are a lot like you who were not fortunate enough to have those.

This is a really interesting and moving thread...

I was only two when Elvis passed so don't remember anything at all.

To all the members that can remember the day... even though it must have been devastating at the time to be a fan when he died, it must have also been fantastic to be a fan whilst he was alive.
