Do you think Elvis was a humble man or did he have an ego?

I read somewhere where he used the line "do you know who I am?" and I thought the wouldn't be like that...

Only in the song of the same name, marina. Or, maybe he did as a joke somewhere once.

Elvis never pulled that celebrity crap to gain anything.

As for an ego, well, everyone has one. While Elvis' was certainly healthy at times, it was never really too out of control.

Overall, Elvis was very humble and shy, despite what some would have you believe ...

Elvis was a very humble and polite man. As far as ego goes...there's a difference in having a big head and having self-confidence. He knew who he was and acted accordingly.
He did have trouble admitting when he was wrong, so I guess he did have an ego of sorts.
...you're moving on the back roads, by the rivers of my memory and for hours you're just gentle on my mind.

By all accounts he was very humble and extremely shy.
Well said Getlo, I just love how you put things in perspective, I thoroughly enjoy your posts.
Also Marina very good thread, thank you!

I think he had both sides in his personality.

I read he was a very humble person...when he met other artists he was the first one to go next to them, to introduce himself and make compliments to them (altought he was ELVIS THE KING ).

But I also think that as every other person, especially "man" he had also his ego and maybe it came out with time, when he started to be more self confident in professional and private life.

I think Elvis had a little ego just as we all have in some way, if you had as much talent and everyone throwing themselves at you it had to effect you in some way

On the whole the shy humble country boy was real, he treated his fans with respect

He could be both. That is why he is facinating. For every trait in him, we can also see the opposite. Most of us have times where we fluctuate. No one is always just one way. But I think Elvis's conflicts were sometimes extreme and he didn't even understand. As for him ever saying "Do you Know who I am", well when he got ticked off when he knew something wasn't right, he'd pull that card out.

    Humble Pie

I do think also over all Elvis was shy and polite. He never lost that "southern charm" which personally I find so attractive

But you are correct also, he certainly didnt get pushed around. He was a confident person especially on stage. He was in command and a bit of an ego could be seen but I really think elvis said it best himself..."the man is one thing and the entertainer is another".

    Great thread!

Yes I would have to agree with both Getlo and JJ. I think he was basically humble but a little ego too would flair up now and then....just normal as most people are.

I don't think that Elvis had an ego. He had a certain charm that people couldn't refuse. Many books, video's and other stuff describe him as a very shy, humble and polite man. And I think that was true.. Almost everyone who met him tells he was very polite and shy. And very down to earth. Almost everywhere he goes there were fans (with camera's). If he wasn't like that and just played it to be loved by the fans.. I think people saw he played it.. So I think he was just that way.

And Ego.. I think he outed it in his style. His clothes and jewelry and sunglasses. He made an image and bought things he didn't have when he was young.

By the way, ever heard Robbie Williams or any star nowadays walked to the gates of their home to talk with the fans? I don't.. That's just the way you are.. it's part of who you are.. I deeply think he saw his fans as people he knew and never think he was more then them or any other human being. People many times said to him 'You're the King'. He replied with 'No, there's only one King and that's God'. Beautiful..

his ego comes into focus when he dared anyone to disagree with him.......that would be the ego talking.....but he sure always referred to others as "ma'am" and "sir".....very polite.

Everyone has an ego, Elvis Presley included.

It's how you use it (and whether or not you can control it) that matters.

    Ego:
    1. noun, plural e?gos. The "I" or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.
    2. Psychoanalysis: the part of the psychic apparatus that experiences and reacts to the outside world and thus mediates between the primitive drives of the id and the demands of the social and physical environment.
    3. egotism: conceit; self-importance: Her ego becomes more unbearable each day.
    4. self-esteem or self-image: feelings: Your criticism wounded his ego.
    5. Philosophy: the enduring and conscious element that knows experience.
    b. Scholasticism: the complete person comprising both body and soul.
    6. Ethnology: a person who serves as the central reference point in the study of organisational and kinship relationships.

I don't think He had an Ego where he went around demanding things "I'm the *Bleep Bleeping* (self censored) King so bow down" but I do think
as a guy who was the star everywhere he went from a fairly young age on, he came to expect things a certain way and supposedly wasn't that responsive to people saying no to him. There are stories where he was denied things and threatened to buy the pharmacy so he could get them. Thats a ego thing. On the other hand he bent over backwards to make sure others got to feel what it was like to have a new car, or a nice watch or ring or whatever, and Yes Sir, Yes M'am to fans and common folk, and thats pretty humble. It had to be hard to be Elvis all the time but other then the Fame and its trappings he really seemingly (from the books that have come out ) wasn't all that different then anyone else. We all have our moments of ego .

Oh sure I did not mean he went around making outrageous demands-but take for instance the "2001 theme" as the prelude to his coming on stage that takes guts and yes a little ego as well. That music in the movie "2001" signalled huge change in a planets existence. But I do feel he never forgot what it was like to live day by day-paycheck to paycheck.
