Britney Spears: The New Elvis

Is it just me, or does Britney Spears in 2007 remind you of Elvis Presley in 1977? To see her stumbling around the stage, looking flabby and out of shape, seemingly unaware of what she was doing there, confused to the point that she couldn't even lip-sync, performing a song markedly inferior to her halcyon hits of yore -- it seemed as desperate a cry for help as any of those tragic latter-day shows and records that Elvis sleepwalked his way through in his last years.
Unlike Elvis, Britney at least seems aware that she's got a problem. She's been to rehab, after all, even if it doesn't seem to have done her much good. And even though she looks pretty bad by her own post-pubescent pinup standards, most women would probably still be proud to flaunt the body she displayed at the VMAs. Although probably not in that particular outfit.
But just because she doesn't have the bloated, peanut butter-distended gut, or a prescription drug habit that could wipe out Duane Reade's stockpile, as late-period Elvis had, the State of Spears is still an alarming one. To look in her eyes during her "performance" of the lackluster new single "Gimme More" was to see someone who, like Elvis, didn't want to be there anymore. By the time his disastrous TV performance ("Elvis In Concert," so bad that even the exploitative Presley estate isn't selling it on home video) aired, he'd already been dead for two months. And it seems like Britney is staring into that same abyss.
What makes Brit's downfall sadder than Elvis' is that she doesn't even have the musical talent to express her torment in song. Even at the end, Elvis was still capable of putting his pain into brilliant singles like "Hurt" or "Unchained Melody." Britney's only way of showing us how she feels is by shaving her head or showing her coochie or bashing K-Fed's car with an umbrella.
The most tragic part of it all is that, if Britney does wind up going to that big celebrity-studded awards show in the sky, she'll be remembered as a musical version of Anna Nicole Smith -- if she's remembered at all. Elvis was a lot of things, many of them less than savory, but it's impossible to deny that the guy had a gift. And at his core, no matter what kind of trash he made his fans deal with, was his genius, which no amount of drug use or half-assed performances could obscure completely. Look beyond the tabloid trash surrounding Britney and you've got ... what? A Mouseketeer gone wrong?
If the former Mrs. Federline somehow figures out a way to channel what she's going through and put that into her music, she could wind up becoming not only a legitimate artist, but a hero of sorts -- a triumphant pop culture icon for the new millennium. But I'm not holding my breath.

uh - Britney Spears is in NO way the new Elvis......that's even ridiculous to think......there are others out there more talented than she.
agree kelly, she's nothing like elvis
Look past that part. Read what the author is saying about Elvis.
OMG...thats really bad, some peoplee just blow there mouth off when they feel like it.
There will always be those who will only concentrate of that fat bloated image of Elvis and forget all the good years he had - they're slanted that way....
Britney being the next Elvis - no way, there is not comparison at all.
Diane
No, not Britney...
She proved it with that "Trouble" song...![]()
Britney the new Elvis? Are you kidding me? I believe you must be dreaming to think even for awhile that this could be so. Comparing Elvis later condition to that of Britney seems to be another of those fertile imagination of some writers to gain attention again using Elvis as their effective tool. Now they are all aware of the Elvis magic that never stop to fascinate more people all the time.
PleaseSorry not even worth answering this one!!
Britney may be the new Monkees or NEw Kids on the Block.
Even on the EIC special though Elvis had trouble and looked ill- he still could dig down and entertain. He did not need to lipsinc as so many performers today do to compensate for not being able to always stay on key.
She is so much less a musical talent, as she is a personality IMO
The next Elvis? LMBAO
Britney aint nothin but a joke. She's like MJ....she's finished.
Did yall see how the stars reacted to her MTV performance? They were laughin at her, and those who weren't had a look of *** on their faces.
If anyone is the new or modern day Elvis, it's Beyonce. She even doin the singin role in all her movies like he did, and puttin out soundtracks.
And now Bey's got fans makin bootleg cds of her concerts like Elvis fans do.
Plus, she's got a live album comin out this year or early next year.
Her manager is the black Colonel Parker, her dad, and he markets her just like the Colonel did Elvis.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!SHE IS NO WHERE LIKE ELVIS! SHE IS NOTHING!
DON'T EVEN BRING UP HER NAME! I CANNOT STAND HER!

That's a good article though, actually. The author makes it clear that talent-wise of course there is no comparison, but elements of the decline are comparable. And if Britney could get herself enough together to channel all the crap into some artistic outlet, maybe she could be a respectable act someday.
Yes, we would rather not read articles about Elvis being fat and any other negatives, but of course they were there. He died at such an early age for a reason.
Nothing wrong with choosing not to focus on such things, but IMO you have to acknowledge them.
Having said all that, there was plenty of good that came out of the final years and believe me, I am quicker to recognize those things than probably most people are. I have heard recordings of most of his concerts in 1977 and greatly enjoy them. The Jungle Room sessions are among my most favorite.
...you won't forget me when I go.
no no.. I really don't think Britney would be the new Elvis..she ever won't be. Elvis is Elvis.. and there won't be any other Elvis in the world.. in this universe.
Britney doesn't deserve to be called the new Elvis![]()

There you go, Vissie.
