Thread: How do you rate Elvis as a balladeer?

  1. #21
Elvis himself in the 50s thought he was not a very good ballad singer. He thought Pat Boone was the much better ballad singer. I recall an interview where he commented on this. But as he developed the richness and depth just oozed out.

I wouldn't say Jim Reeves' version of 'He'll Have To Go' pales compared to Elvis' or that Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas' meant nothing compared to Elvis' rendition.

But Elvis had this special versatility for sure.

Anything Elvis sang, it suited him.

I love the ballads, he can sing them with lots of emotion, where it comes from the heart but mostly the soul. His voice is so natural.

But i must admit, i love his 50's music !

If anything at all was not suitable for Elvis, it must have been degenerated music or something.

Guys, believe it or not, there is 1 song that elvis sang that he should not have - "King of The Road" it's on a cd of his I have and I'm sorry....but he just can't sing that one well....but that is the only song I've ever heard him sing that I say that about.

KSIMMS2.....hey...You must be wrong...Elvis NEVER recorded "King of the road"...what cd are you talking about??....I`m sure it`s NOT by Elvis, it must be by someone else you heard sing that song...100%(1000000% sure, lol)

No, Elvis never sang that song. Roger Miller wrote and recorded it.

Another site was talking about that a few days ago. Did they say Doug Church?? I think so.

Me too Kelly. In Vegas it was the ballads that were the real standouts...American Trilogy, My Way etc....those would give you goosebumps

It is pretty cool that the only Elvis performance you don't like wasn't really Elvis. Just shows how the copycats can't pull it off :-)

Elvis was a great ballad singer in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I think he had grown as a ballad singer when he got out of the army, but at the same time 50s performances like Love Me, and Young and Beautiful are as good as anything he ever did.

A fan since the middle 50'....I love all different kinds of ELVIS music....but the power ballads of the 70's are my all time favorite.

I will never forget you Rosanne.

Elvis could sing any sort of music and sing it well. I love his ballads from the 70s too. He was able to convey so much emotion. Every song became his own. His are always better than the original or any other version.
