favorite meaningful songs

Hey everybody!

I've been thinking about Elvis' legacy for some time now. All in all, he still touches a sensitive string inside all of us.

Maybe some of you now notice things you didn't pay attention to before - sunsets, dew on a newly formed leaf, stoplights.. All because of Elvis' love for music.

I'm going to ask the people here to tell what their favorite meaningful songs are. It's not to bring 'Burning Love' in discredit, it's just that I like the philosophical depth of some songs.

Here are my favorites:

- Danny Boy; one of the most emotional ever - English you don't hear on the bloody streets nowadays, but it's still here in this song.. For some reason he was able to put spine-chilling emotion in this one. I remember an old Johnny Cash mentioning he loved Elvis' rendition.

- The Last Farewell; Roger Whittaker sang it and the song was taken from a poem, I think - moving story indeed.. If memory serves me correctly, the story is real.

- Life; the rhyme in this song is great and it's theologically correct - although I do know some don't like it..

These songs have some poetic meaning reminding me of literature/poetry. In some other cases I've had a fascination for Johnny Cash's 'Drive On' (great rhyme: "spit in a bamboo's viper's face and I'd be dead but by God's grace..") and 'Flesh and Blood' - too bad Elvis didn't get to co-operate with Johnny..

There was a guy who recorded a song years ago by the name of Glen Campbell. The song's title is 'Gentle On My Mind', which Elvis did record - this song is composed rather intricately, but beautifully. Hartford (the writer) said that he was inspired to write the lyrics after seeing the film Doctor Zhivago and that it took about fifteen minutes to write down.

I just wish Elvis would have taken the chance to work with some poetic artists.

But now I'm looking forward to your new posts, ladies and gentlemen. I know maintaining a forum is a great responsibility, like maintaining the toilets in a Haitian jail, but it's worth the effort. I know meaningful songs may not amount to a hill of beans in this world, but this is our hill and these are our beans.

oh yes.. that is so beautiful. The first time I listened that version.. i really had to listen it repeart. There is something magical in his voice. I really recommend it ..

I agree. A sad song turning into a beautiful shape sung by Elvis.
Of course there are many others such as What Now My Love, It's Easy For You, Bitter They Are Harder They Fall...etc..

I just wanted to wish you good luck. We're all counting on you.

Thank you all for your posts! I'd like to point out one thing though. Songs such as 'What Now My Love' or 'It's Easy For You' are passionate and emotional, but more of a love/sadness song rather than a song with a poetic meaning to it.

'The Last Farewell', for instance, is a song telling a story about a person travelling with melancholy - themes concerning death and yearning for peace of the soul which Elvis must have known in his heart; you can imagine this person's view while closing your eyes. Elvis supposedly got emotional after hearing Roger Whittaker's version. Mr. Whittaker is a neat performer with a special talent for whistling - he loves to visit Germany and sings both in English and in German. The people here love him.

Thanks for the suggestion for 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes'. Strangely enough I missed this one, it is one of my favorites - Elvis really felt every word he sang. I also like this poem 'Men With Broken Hearts', which I once posted on BillyGilmanFans.com in order to discipline him and to reprimand him for phariseic behaviour.

I also like this song called 'Stay Away'.. "I must go, where the hills say don't stay away".. The lyrics and the song's structure add up to a magical whole. I can sense Elvis' Indian soul in it.
