Thread: Who turned you on to Elvis...?

Smile Who turned you on to Elvis...?

I found a cute little article today that touched me. She wrote this about her grandparents...but one grandmother as she put it "loves Elvis and the summers spent with her created a love of Elvis in me." Reading this made me wonder how many fans were actually "turned on" to Elvis through family members. So I thought it would be interesting to see how each of us actually came to be fans. Share your stories....

And here is the link to the article I spoke of, just in case you would like to read it. It isn't an article solely about Elvis, but it is a good article none the less.

Well,I became a fan through my sister. She was an elvis fan for years and always talked about how handsome he was and at that time i was just like ehh whatever ya right. Well about 3 years ago i was bored and was flippin through the channels on the tv and came across Elvis and June: A Love story. Right then i was like "man she wasnt kidding this guy is hot!". So from then ive always been about Elvis!!!

My older brother got me listening to Elvis. He was about 6 years older than me. My mom would take my older brother and sister to Elvis movies when they were released. I wasn't invited. Guess I was too young. One year, I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6, for my birthday, my brother gave me a bunch of Elvis singles and he put them in one of those plastic round 45 single carriers....remember those? One of the records was Little Sister. How fitting! I think that was one of the singles I really wanted. I can't remember which others he gave me in that batch, but I still have each and every one of them. Then I graduated to buying my OWN Elvis records!

Oh yeah...I remember! I'm wondering if remembering things like this means that I'm getting "old"... But yes...the good old days, for sure!

You've heard the saying, "There's no crying in baseball!". Okay, there's no getting old as an Elvis fan!

I've only been a fan of Elvis for about a month ( ), but I was turned onto Elvis when I went for a family vacation to Nashville and decided to day trip to Graceland with my friends just to say we went. I totally fell in love with him and everything about him.

    Ann Margret

I've been an Elvis fan since September 2006 (about a year). I was surfing around the net and something about Ann Margret came up and I decided to learn more about her and one thing led to another... and this is when I discovered Elvis. The bug had bit and hasn't let go since. Of course everyone has heard of Elvis but to really get to know him by reading about his life and listening to his songs, watching the movies, looking at his pictures adds so much more to my experience of Elvis. There was a lot that surprised me about him that I didn't know (like everything) and in a way I'm glad that information wasn't common knowledge because it allowed me to discover things about him for myself. And then of course, I get on the internet in groups like this where we're all NUTS over him and I feel like I'm at home, among others who dig what I dig. Dig?

Learning about Elvis has been a rollercoaster of emotions I have to admit but as someone once wrote, "How can you NOT love Elvis?"

l was a little girl growing up with elvis music my parents played over and over, so when l reached my teens l got more interested, but didn't really become a fan yet. In my 20's l really got involved and loved him ever since, a day doesn't go by that l don't listern to his music or read a book about him, l really can't find a better hobbie than elvis himself.

I guess my entire life I was surrounded by Elvis music. My mother and sister were into Elvis, my mother ever since the 50's, when she lived in Memphis at the same time Elvis was in the Army. They both had several LP's and 45's of his, so when I was just a kid I would play them sometimes. My mother also kept a shoebox full of magazines and clippings from before and after his death. They all got to go to the infamous March 20, 1974 Memphis show. I've always been jealous that they got to actually see him on stage. I eventually wound up being an even bigger fan than they are...lol

My father had a collection of about 15 Lps - mostly Camden Lps, which at the time I never took notice of. But one day, when I was about 10 years old (1986) I heard 'Moody Blue' on the radio and I remember buying a cassette of the album and playing the track over and over and over again until the tape was burnt out! I have never looked back since.

I have no idea who turned me on to Elvis. I guess my mom because she used to watch TCM and AMC all the time and they're the one's who mostly show Elvis movies. I remember watching his movies a lot.

Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your stories...I like hearing how each of you came to discover the uniqueness that was Elvis...

As for me, I was raised on Elvis. My Daddy, who was a talented musician in his own right, used to play his guitar and sing Elvis' early stuff. I used to sing with him even at the early age of three or so, I guess music and the love for it was born and bred in me. My Mother loved Elvis too...I can remember sitting with her and watching him on television. As I grew older, I chose to continue to listen to Elvis and became enamored with his life. Throughout my teenage years, I didn't have to fear backlash from my peers, because Elvis was "cool" back then. It really doesn't matter if he is cosidered "cool" or not now, as I am past the age of caring about that type of thing, all that matters to me now is that he be remembered for the extraordinary talent that he posessed and the wonderfully good heart that he was blessed to have. Elvis always wanted those around him to be happy, and he spent a small fortune trying to please those whom he cared for. His generousity was overwhelming, and he deserves to be remembered for his unbridled kindness to others. Elvis may have veered away from what is considered "normal", but he retained the values that he was taught by his Mother. He was always polite to people, showed respect to others, and he never forgot where he came from. The thing that most touched me is how he ALWAYS treated his fans with such love and respect. Not many "big" entertainers will do that. He knew that he was loved by his fans and he cherished them. Elvis was a special human being. He was not perfect. And was quick to point out that there was only one who walked this earth that was perfect and that was Jesus Christ...thus, he never felt worthy of the title of "King"...which in itself tells you a little about the man, IMO. No, he wasn't a King of men, or by birthright, but he WAS the King of Rock'n'Roll. And he will always be #1 to me....

Daddy, I miss you more every day. You will always be my hero..

Thank you for sharing, Queenie, I really enjoyed reading your touching thoughts.

Well...my grandmother turned me on to Elvis. She had some of his albums and I remember playing them over and over as a small girl. I was only 9 when he died...but have continued to love Elvis....finally went to Graceland in June 2007. Sadly, my grandmother who passed away in 2000 was not able to go with me. She would tell me when I was a little girl - one day - we'll go to Graceland. Wish we could have went together.
