I always loved the original of this song. I just played the Danny O'Keefe version and it took me back to 1972. Loved it. Played Elvis' version which I haven't heard in a long time. I got teary-eyed hearing him sing it. Never thought much about it until after Elvis died that he left out the "I got my pills to ease the pain" line. Thanks for posting the links to the song.
i think leon russell`s 1984 version sounds great http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2xraZf...elated&search=
elvis still did the best version. another thought i wonder if elvis 73 version could be remixed with a more modern backing with saxaphone player like leon russell`s 84 version.![]()
I listened to Leon Russell's after I posted. I liked his version very much. Some of the comments weren't very kind, though. It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be the same as the original to sound good. Never knew Leon Russell sang the song.
I liked All them, I put Elvis Version at number one , Danny O'Keefe number two Chet Atlkins and Earl \Klugh(instrumental version) number three and at number four Leon Russell Version

Once again Elvis's version sounds so much better.Every other version lacks the feeling E puts in his songs, not to mention all the others sound like they are singing out of their noses.![]()
"I got my pills to ease the pain,
Can't find the thing to ease the rain.
I'd love to try and settle down,
But everybody's leavin' town ..."
No wonder Elvis never sang this verse ... !
Getlo - cute'n'cuddly
love that song, elvis sang it beauiful.
"I got my pills to ease the pain,
Can't find the thing to ease the rain.
I'd love to try and settle down,
But everybody's leavin' town ..."
did elvis cut these lines out because they were too close to home![]()
really one of Elvis' best songs he ever recorded.
very touching song.
I'd like to go to Graceland
Memphis,Tennessee
Danny O'Keffe's version is very nice but Elvis' voice is still far superior.
Jerry Lee Lewis also did a version of this wonderful song but it's nowhere near so good

Elvis' version is absolutely beautiful and passionate.
I just wish more people could acknowledge and witness the greatness of these mostly unheard of trax outside the fan base.
The longer unedited MASTER found on the splendid 2000 BMG upgrade Promised Land was an absolute revelation.
Elvis version is the best!!![]()
