I guess the only one who would know for sure, would be Elvis.However, someone once told me that he hired him back for several reasons. Vernon thought that he should, and so did some of the MM...and they worked together to convince Elvis of this. And too, Elvis was told repeatedly (by the Colonel) throughout his career that he (the Colonel) was the one who made him what he was...so he was a bit insecure about not having the Colonel around. From what I have found out about the Colonel, he was a very controlling person, well skilled at pinpointing someone's insecurities, and I think that he knew how to "pull the strings" so to speak when it came to Elvis.
But I could be wrong about this. Just what I was told. Sounds logical to me though...
