Have seen this before but it's always worth another look. If you haven't watched it yet you have to catch the roll Elvis does at the end of Hurt. He sounds absolutely awesome and he is really on top of his game, appearing to be very limber and mobile--he didn't move around that much in the Aloha special! It is both uplifting and saddening to see him so putting on a performance of that caliber so close to the end.
Thanks for the link, nolvis.

...you won't forget me when I go.
Sorry, but I simply hate to see these kind of clips. To me it seems like Elvis' movement during uptempo songs made him look silly and a karikature of his pre-40s self. Perhaps he felt during that that he was still rocking, but to the audience it probably looked just as "weird" as to me.
I've read lots of show reviews in newspaper from the late 70s, and quite a lot of journalists also put questionmarks to this.
When turning 40 Elvis struggled a lot with how he had to present himself. It's no secret Elvis wanted to be a ballad singer a la Dean Martin, but felt that he was obliged to do rock'n roll songs. Turning 40 he tried on 2-piece suits, obviously because he felt less comfortable in a jumpsuit as a 40 year old man. I think he was right. Instead of re-inventing himself, coming up with something new, he changed back to the same old formula.
It's hard to express what I try to make clear, but I hope you understand the meaning.

I absolutely love the ending to Hurt also Lonnie!!!!!And the comments from people regarding this video really say alot about the misguided horror show Elvis in '77 crap that even his own family and company(EPE,etc.)don't do anything about when the truth is out there in soooo many forms like this great video, and the CBS Special has the best 70's performances of songs like See See Rider,You gave me a Mountain,Hound Dog(great energy!),and a great extra verse toe tapping get up and dance version of his breakthrough hit,Thats Alright...trying to get to you,how great thou art,i really don't want to know,hurt....!!!

he really sounds so wonderful. unbelievable.. even he was a quite ill during 1977, and still he sounded so great.

You are spot on.These clips are painfull to watch to me.You are not seeing Elvis in all his glory in that clip.I disagree however about the audiences.Elvis had adoring fans and they loved to see a brief glimpse of his previous self. You are correct though when it came to unbiased journalists in attendance.I probably will take some flack for my comments. To me this is another case of the fans wearing the "rose colored glasses".
Jak
Albert, I see what you mean about him not moving much during "Polk Salad Annie". That's one of my favorite songs and I love the way he moves during that song - very prevocative to me (during the late 60's early 70's)....so sexy!!
When I was growing up in the seventies, I would watch a lot of fights of Muhammad Ali, despite the fact that he was no longer the boxer he was before he went to jail. Yet in many of those fights, he would should flashes of his greatness, whether it be the great footwork, or a lightning quick jab, either way, even though the memorable moments became farther apart as he grew older, we still enjoyed them immensely when they did happen, same thing applies to Elvis.
Very well said Joe,wait-a-go!!!!!And like a fellow repeats on the comments for the video numerous times, his voice was absolutely amazing right to the end,and especially Rapid City(he says that and so do i!!!)
