A handgun once owned by Elvis Presley has been stolen from a display case at a museum.

Police Monday said the black 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol was taken from the Elvis After Dark museum across the street from Elvis' Graceland home last Tuesday.

A video camera caught the man removing the pistol from the display case around midnight. The video was shown on at least one Memphis TV station Monday night.

Thousands of Elvis fans were in Memphis last week for various ceremonies marking the 30th anniversary of his death.

The theft was discovered Friday when a visitor noticed a glass panel on the display case was unfastened and Graceland officials reviewed the video. The museum is operated by Graceland.

Who would do such a thing? Apparently someone with nothing better to do than steal a gun...

And apparently someone wasn't keeping an eye on things when this happened....*rolls eyes*

I says it happened at midnight. Had to be an inside job. I hope they catch the person before they hurt someone.

That is correct...the gun has been recovered...it was found inside a toilet...it still makes me mad that someone wasn't watching the place like they were supposed to do, though....

It's a sad thing when someone steals from the dead! It's like stealing a memory. I'm glad they've got it back though

Probably once he stole it - he realized what he did - major oops - and left it in porta potty to be returned? Just a thought....maybe he felt guilty afterwards?

Hi, this link was just posted in my Elvis yahoo group - if you watch the video of the thief he actually has 2 guns in his possession - did you guys notice that? What do you think?

hey the whole link didn't "highlight" so you'll have to hightlight whole link and copy/paste into your browser. But it clearly shows the man with one gun in each hand.

Wel I have seen it all now....how easy was that to take !!!!! and not one person noticed for a few days now thats even more shocking....also it looks to me like the guys hand reflection in the glass and only one gun was reported missing...but what a cheek and he did it so casually too.

Ksimms2, I couldn't get the link you posted to work but that's okay. If the guy had brought another gun did he plan to "stick 'em up" to steal Elvis' gun then found he didn't need to use it since no one was paying any attention to him? Then he gets an attack of conscience and throws it into the porta potty?

This guy really sounds like a real fruitcake. I'm real happy the gun was found though. Elvis would have had a good laugh over this one. Hopefully they will keep a closer eye on it from now on.

By the way ksimms2, congratulations on your "Backstage Pass" and I hope to see you around these posts for a long time.

Glad they recovered the gun, have they ever recovered Elvis' bible stolen from the Tupelo home? Now that was low!

When me, my mom, and my friend went last year, no one was watching that stuff either when we went into that museum. But they did have someone standing on the outside of the entrance door in the giftshop.

Elvis' properties are part of all his fans. The guy that took the gun, is not a real Elvis fan...
