he all of a sudden just stopped wearing them which is confusing
mabye he forgot to put them on or something lol
I believe it was due to the extra weight they added. They were bulky. The fans grabing at them might also have played in the descion.
Jak
Yeah, the weight of the Capes made him stop wearing them... the last time he wore a cape was in Atlanta, on the 3rd of July 1973. You can find the concert on the import called Cape Finale in Atlanta![]()
Elvis stopped wearing the capes for two reasons:
1. the weight
2...Overzealous female fans who would try to grab the edges of the capes and pull him offstage....
The reason why he stopped wearing capes was the fact that when Elvis had the end of it in his hand when singing Can't Help Falling In Love, He would shake their hand and sometime the ladies would get ahold of the cape. They would try to pull Elvis off of stage. So he quit wearing them. The weight of them wasn't really the cause that Elvis quit wearing them because he only wore the capes only part of the show.
I think he could have attached one extra year of wearing the capes. But capes would have looked weird from 1975 on.
Is this safety reason a wild (but logical) guess, or has it been confirmed by anyone close to this decision?

LOL
Elvis didn't stop wearing capes, he was stopped by his surroundings. The safety guards found the capes a hazard. They really had to talk into Elvis to make their point. Elvis had a choice: discarding the capes or minimize the personal contact with the audience.
It is a myth that the last show Elvis ever wore a cape was on July 3, 1973 in Atlanta. He still used capes during the August/September 1973 season, the January/February 1974 and a few times during the March 1974 tour. The very last time a cape was seen on stage was on March 5th, 1974 in Auburn where he came on stage with a cape in his hand and put it on the piano where it stayed for the rest of the show.
And page 99 of the Elvis book "The Concert Years" says about the opening show on August 6th, 1973: "Elvis was wearing the Aloha outfit during the opening show but, unlike previous shows, he wore the cape only during "Can't Help Falling In Love"."
Thanks for info Leroy and everybody!!![]()

I knew you would tell it was a myth that he last wore capes in Atlanta. At least I wasn't the only one who said that wasn't he last time. I knew he wore capes a few times in 1974. I tried to tell some that but they wouldn't listen.
Not many photos exist of Elvis with capes after the Atlanta show of July 3, 1973. In my book of Elvis Day By Day, it shows a photo of Elvis sometime during the March 1974 tour with a cape on him. The write up says that this is the last known photo of Elvis with a cape on him. The write does continue with only one other photo of Elvis with a cape was taken during March 5, 1974 show with Elvis holding the cape in his left hand when he came out but Elvis never wore the cape during the show.
But only a small amount of photos are known of Elvis with a cape from the
Another write up in the book says that he had a cape that was near the piano during the March 3, 1974 Afternoon show but no good photos from the show can confirmed this but it says also that Elvis didn't wear the cape during this show.
I have heard from people who went to some of his shows during the August - September 1973 season that Elvis did wear capes during some of the shows. But as Leroy said only statements of people can confirmed this. Why would they lie?
Interesting... i always tought the Atlanta show was the last one he wore a cape.
I don't think we can really speak about lying. These events happened so long ago that a lot of people, who attended a show forgot when and where. Besides that, not everybody's paying attention to details the way we do. Some aren't even interested.
But the fact remains, and I'm with you all the way on this one, that Elvis didn't stop wearing capes after Atlanta. He didn't wear them the same way as he used to do, but he also didn't quit abruptly. It's quite possible that Elvis decided to try out wearing them without putting himself in a dangerous spot. It's even possible Elvis wanted to let the audience get used to the fact he was going to use the capes less than usual.
After the July tour a whole set of new costumes were designed: the 1973 "Blue Vine", the 1973 "Gold Vine", the 1973 "Arabian", the 1973 "Lava Suit", the 1973 "Nail Mirrored Suit" and three versions of the 1973 "Spanish Flower". All these suits came with a matching cape. The 1973 "Gold Vine" even had two capes; one with a gold lining and one with a silky white lining.
I do realize that some of these suits could have been ordered before the desicion to stop using the capes but it's not likely.
Gene Doucette stated that both "Black Spanish Flower" suits were made only to keep the staff busy. They weren't even ordered by Elvis.
